Explore one of Tanzania’s top game parks on the well-loved Northern Safari Circuit in just a few days! Starting and ending in Arusha, Tanzania, this affordable 3-day road Safari journeys to the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater, hosting Africa’s Big Five and an abundance of other wildlife.
The tour is ideal for travelers with a limited time and budget in East Africa! The tour begins with collection in Arusha city, Tanzania’s safari capital located at the foot of Mount Meru. We travel to Ngorongoro Crater located 75 miles (120 km) west of the town of Arusha.
The afternoon is at leisure. You can choose to enjoy one of the many activities available. We spend the night at one of the lodges/ camps on the rim of the crater or close to the entrance gate of the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area.

The Ngorongoro Crater is part of the Serengeti ecosystem, a massive caldera spanning an impressive 18 km in diameter with walls as high as 600m. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to the densest mammalian population in Africa, at around 25,000 large animals.
The Crater is an extinct volcanic caldera in the Eastern Great Rift Valley, northern Tanzania from Arusha and is home to populations of Lion, Leopard, and Hyena along with good herds of Wildebeest, Buffalo, and Zebra.
Other game in the Ngorongoro includes Serval Cat, Cheetah, Jackal, Grant’s and Thompson’s Gazelle, Flamingo, and bat-eared foxes along with approximately 400 species of bird. Animals are free to leave or enter the crater but most of them stay because of the plentiful water and food available on the crater floor throughout the year.
On day 2, we descend the steep crater walls to explore this diverse wilderness area teeming with Africa’s wildlife. The Ngorongoro Crater hosts the Big Five of Africa, boasting one of the highest concentration of lions in the world.
Almost all of the wild animal species found on the savannahs of East Africa inhabit this compact crater. We stop for a picnic lunch in the crater and after our thrilling wildlife experience we head back to our accommodations.
On the 3rd day of our safari, we depart Ngorongoro and drive back to bustling Arusha. Along the way, you may stop at Karatu or Mto Wa Mbu for a cultural village tour. In the early afternoon we arrive in Arusha, where our fantastic 3-day Ngorongoro Crater Safari to the Northern Safari Circuit ends.

Walking Safaris: Walking in and around the Ngorongoro conservation Area is encouraged, but should be done with guides
People and Culture (Maasai): Visitors are welcomed at two designated Maasai cultural bomas one on the road to Serengeti and another close to Sopa Lodge at Irkeepusi village.
Visit the Maasai Cultural bomas to learn more about their unique culture, to take photographs, and to buy mementos.
Bird Watching: The mixture of forest, canyons, grassland plains, Lakes and marshes provide habitats for a wide range of bird life. White storks, yellow wagtails and swallows mingle with the local inhabitants: stilts, saddle-bill storks, ibis, ruff and various species of duck.
Oldupai Gorge (originally misnamed Olduvai) is the most famous archaeological location in East Africa, and has become an essential visit for travelers to Ngorongoro or Serengeti.
Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive: The area contains over 25,000 large animals including 26 black Rhinoceros. There are 7,000 Wildebeests, 4,000 Zebras, 3,000 Eland, and 3,000 Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelles.
The crater also has the densest known population of Lions, numbering 62. Higher up, in the rain-forests of the crater rim, are Leopards, about 30 large Elephants, mountain Reedbuck and more than 4,000 Buffalos, Spotted Hyenas, Jackals, rare wild Dogs, Cheetahs, and other felines

Day 1: Arusha/ Moshi – Drive to The Ngorongoro Crater
0800 Hours: After breakfast depart in your 4×4 safari vehicle towards the awe-inspiring Ngorongoro Crater.
You’ll pass through maize, coffee, and banana plantations and a scenic escarpment on the edge of the Rift Valley with stunning views over the distant Lake Manyara.
After a shortstop, you’ll continue on your way to Ngorongoro Crater to arrive in time for lunch at your lodge/camp.
1300 Hours: Check-in and lunch follow.
1400 Hours: After lunch, the afternoon is at leisure. You can choose to enjoy one of the many activities available. Karatu Town tour – this tour will include a visit to the local market and a nearby school.
Cultural experiences – this will give an opportunity to understand the way of life as experienced by the local tribes for example the Iraqw as well as the neighboring tribes like the Maasai and the Bushmen.
Nature walks hiking and jogging – this activity could be done in the surrounding forest area as well as in the nearby villages and into the town of Karatu.

Day 2: Full Day in The Ngorongoro Crater
0600 Hours: Today you will head out into the early morning mist and make the 2000-foot descent into the crater.
Explore the distinct areas of forest, lakes, and open grassland on a half-day game drive during which you can hope to spot wildlife including the Big Five, cheetah, and hyenas.
0900 Hours: Picnic Breakfast on the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater.
Ngorongoro Crater is inhabited by about 30,000 animals, of which half are zebra and wildebeest. The crater also has hyenas, lions, leopards, cheetahs, jackals, hippo, bull elephants, buffalo, Grant’s, and Thompson’s gazelles.
The salt-whitened shores of Lake Magadi are turned a pastel pink from thousands of flamingoes sifting algae and shrimps from this soda lake.
The lake also attracts myriad other water birds including avocets, plovers, and black-winged stilts, etc
1300 Hours: We enjoy our packed lunch on the floor of the crater and continue with our game drive.
1500 Hours: We drive to ascend to the rim of the crater and drive to our lodge/ camp
