Since 2006, the village has received international attention as the hometown of Barack Obama Sr., the father of the former United States President. Barack Obama, Senior, is buried in the village.

Some of their family members, including his paternal step-grandmother, Sarah Onyango Obama, still live in the village. Because of its connection to the American president, the village is expected to attract many tourists from the US and other countries.

Nyangoma Kogelo Village Kisumu Cultural Day Trip Itinerary

0830 Hours: Depart Kisumu after breakfast at your residence/ hotel, then take the Kisumu-Busia road. You will reach the Maseno University gate and proceed 150 meters from the Maseno University gate to the Equator Line Point.

After a photographic session at the Equator line, you will proceed to Luanda, then turn left and head straight to Ngiya market. If you arrive on Tuesday, you will be lucky to catch a glimpse of the market day at Ngiya.

You then divert left just before reaching Mbeji Academy onto Murram Road. You will then take about 15 minutes before you arrive at the Kogelo Dispensary on your right. After visiting the dispensary, proceed to the Kogelo market, Kogelo Primary School, and Senator Barack Obama Secondary School. You will then enter Sarah Obama’s home behind the secondary school.

Kogelo is the ancestral home of Barack Obama, Sr., the father of retired United States President Barack Obama. Barack Obama, Sr., is buried in the village. Some of their family members, including his paternal grandmother, Sarah Anyango Obama, still live in the home.

At Sarah Obama’s home, you will find the gravesites of Barack Obama Sr. and his father. You will also find the homestead, Sarah’s house, security tents, the vegetable garden, and the cattle Boma, all under the big mango trees, where Sarah usually conducts interviews with visitors.

After the visit, you will proceed to Siaya town, then to Yala Swamp, cross the River Yala, enter Bondo district, and return to Kisumu city. Lunch will be served en route.
