Osteria Swara Camp Tsavo East National Park is an eco luxury camp on the Galana River’s shores at the park’s edge in the private Kulalu Ranch in Tsavo East. The Tsavo East National Park is 5 km away from the camp.
The camp is situated in Koito, close to Sala Gate and 13km from the center. The camp is 180km from Mombasa via Malindi and 326 km (5-6 hours drive) from Nairobi. By air, the flight takes about an hour and a half from Nairobi to the nearby Voi airstrip, followed by a few minutes’ transfer to the lodge.

Osteria Swara Camp has 12 tented suites with private bathrooms, all looking onto the Galana River. They are designed and furnished to provide our guests with maximum comfort while respecting the environment. Each tent is gracefully decorated with handcrafted furniture in local materials, with verandas facing the river. The twelve spacious double tents can become quadruples, so the capacity of the hotel can sleep 24 to 36 guests.
It’s the only camp in Tsavo East National Park to be accredited as an ‘Eco-luxury Retreat of the World‘. Thanks to its strategic location along the Galana River at the edge of the Park in the private Kulalu Ranch, guests can see a mesmerizing variety of animals that regularly come to drink from the river.
Guests also have an opportunity to enjoy this breathtaking scenery from the comfortable sofas on the veranda or directly from the infinity pool. The restaurant serves a refined combination of Italian and African cuisine, and the cellar offers a selection of high-quality South African and Italian wines.
The onsite restaurant has a spectacular view of the river, and the tables are very close to the large outdoor pool. Guests can enjoy themselves in the infinity pool, which has sun beds on the terrace. There is a well-stocked bar with a shared lounge with a variety of refreshments, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, that wind up your evening while overlooking the stunning river Galana.
Tsavo East National Park Wildlife Highlights
Tsavo East National Park is renowned for its large herds of elephants, often dramatically coated in fine red dust. The population is over 10,000 elephants strong. Tsavo East is also notorious for its lions – the ‘man-eating’ lions of Tsavo, in particular. The lions of Tsavo became famous when railway crews were attacked and many of the workers were eaten in 1898.
Tsavo East is also home to the other members of the Big Five – leopard, buffalo, and rhino. The black rhino population is monitored to protect these endangered mammals from poachers, but they are rarely spotted on game drives. Tsavo East is also home to the endangered hirola antelopes.
Tsavo also hosts a wide variety of other wild animals, from cheetahs, hyenas, and crocodiles to hippos, giraffes, and Grevy’s zebra, along with species typical of northern Kenya, including gerenuk and Somali ostrich. Over 500 bird species have been recorded in Tsavo East, including black kite, crowned crane, hornbill, lovebird, and sacred ibis.
Activities at the camp include: use the spa for body and mind rejuvenation, enjoy a classic 4×4 safari game drive to explore Tsavo East’s vast landscapes, bird watching -Tsavo East is a birdwatcher’s paradise with over 500 bird species, visit Lugard Falls, and getting closer to the wild with guided nature walks.
Other activities include visit Aruba Dam located on the Voi River, bush dining, and sundowner session, visit Mudanda Rock is a natural water catchment area that attracts a wide array of wildlife, visit the Yatta Plateau, enjoy game viewing along the banks of the Galana River to spot hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of birdlife, and visiting the Kanderi Swamp, a lush wetland area within the park, attracting a variety of wildlife.
One could also visit the site of the legendary Man-Eaters lions of Tsavo, visit the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary dedicated to the conservation of the endangered black rhino, visit to nearby Maasai villages or Taita communities, and learn about the traditional ways of life, see cultural dances, etc.
