Lake Mburo National Park

On this 2 day, for Uganda short safari you will explore Lake Mburo National Park, the closest National Park to Kampala as well as the smallest savannah national park in Uganda. With an area of 370 square kilometers, Lake Mburo National Park is the only Uganda National Park that contains an entire Lake.

The park is characterized by a varied landscape of open savanna and acacia woodland, rock kopjes, seasonal and permanent swamps, forest, and open water. The Park is home to several wild games including zebra, impala, eland, buffalo, oribi, Defassa waterbuck, leopard, hippo, hyena, topi, and reedbuck, and over 350 bird species. The bird population is also impressive including the rare Shoebill stork.

Lake Mburo is the only place in Uganda where Impala can be found and the best place to see large herds of Elands (Africa’s largest Antelopes). This short safari begins from Kampala, Uganda’s vibrant capital city, and journeys southwest. Along the way, we visit local markets including a drum market. When we reach the Equator we stop to take photos and test which way water drains from a bath here.

In the afternoon we enter the Lake Mburo National Park, known for its plains game and large hippo population. A boat trip on Lake Mburo is great fun.  Hippos and crocodiles are aplenty and with any luck, you might see a leopard coming down to the lake to drink. Trips take approximately 2 hours and can make a nice change from game drives in safari vehicles.

Overnight accommodation options in Lake Mburo park include Mihingo Lodge, Rwakobo Rock, or Eagles Nest.

Day two of our Uganda Safari begins with a game drive in Lake Mburo National Park. Your guides point out the array of animals and plants found in this diverse Ugandan game reserve as you explore. Lake Mburo is home to zebra, impala, eland, buffalo, oribi, Defassa waterbuck, leopard, hippo, hyena, topi, and reedbuck.

Over 300 species of birds have been recorded within Lake Mburo and it is probably the best place in Uganda for acacia-associated birds. The permanent and seasonal wetland areas that connect the lakes are home to several papyrus endemic bird species including the papyrus gonolek, the blue-headed coucal, and the white-winged and papyrus yellow warblers.

Then we leave the national park and head back to Kampala or Entebbe, stopping for lunch at the Equator monument on the way. Optional activities – horse ride and Squad bikes.
