Outspan Hotel Nyeri

Outspan Hotel Nyeri is in Nyeri town, in the heart of Kenya’s tea and coffee-growing highlands. It is an Eden of vibrant gardens and verdant green lawns and the peacocks that roam at will add to the charming ambiance. Traditionally the gateway to Treetops Lodge, the Outspan is located in the centre of the busy agricultural town of Nyeri, just a short drive from the Aberdare National Park.

The Treetops Hotel, famed for witnessing the ascension of Queen Elizabeth to the throne 72 years ago, will not only be marketed for its British heritage but also as a significant relic of the Mau Mau movement in Nyeri. Treetops earned global recognition as the hotel where Elizabeth II went to bed as a princess and woke up as a queen following the death of King George VI. When she was having dinner at the hotel, which was built on top of a fig (Mugumo) tree, the news of the king’s demise reached her- marking the beginning of her reign. She climbed the rickety ladder to Treetops as a princess on February 5, 1952, and descended the following day as a queen.

The Oustpan Hotel was built in 1926 and was once home to Lord and Lady Baden Powell, founders of the Scout and Girl Guide movements. Their cottage Paxtu is now a museum that is open to our visitors and to scouts and guides from all over the world.

Location: Nyeri is 197 km north of Nairobi (a 3 hour 30 minute drive). The hotel stands above a gorge through which flows the Chania River. Set in rolling gardens, it features numerous ancient trees and flowering shrubs. The Aberdare National Park: Highlands, moorlands, peaks, and Falls Aptly dubbed ‘Scotland with Lions’, this atmospheric park showcases the chill, wild and beautiful moorlands of the Aberdare mountain range.
An often mist-wreathed realm where elephants roam through lichen-hung forests; spectacular waterfalls plunge into churning pools, and trout-filled streams cascade through mossy dells, it offers matchless views of the glittering coronet of Mount Kenya and the sparkling lakes of the Great Rift Valley. Believed by the Kikuyu to be one of the homes of Ngai (God), the area became known as the ‘White Highlands’ in the 1920s, due to the large numbers of Europeans who settled there.

During the 1950s, the dense forests and bamboo thickets were the scene of intense guerrilla warfare between the British and the ‘Mau Mau’ freedom fighters of Kenya, while the famous ‘Treetops’ Hotel was where the young Princess Elizabeth heard she had become Queen Elizabeth II of England.

Wildlife highlights: colobus monkey, leopard, lion, serval cat, elephant, warthog, black rhino, giant forest hog, reed and bushbuck, buffalo, duiker, suni, eland and the rare bongo antelope. Birds: 250 recorded species.

Accommodation: The Outspan has 42 rooms and 3 cottages. All offer kingsized beds, large bathrooms, fireplaces, internet access points, satellite TV, and balconies. The new Chania Wing also offers 8 rooms, which have more modern bathrooms and also offer minibar facilities. The pretty cottages stand in a row overlooking and have their small gardens. There is also an option of staying in a tented camp.

Dining and bars: The dining room features Chippendale-styled furniture, crisp white linen, and silver service. There is also a charming lounge, an elegant ‘Sherry Bar’ and a rather more relaxed ‘Kirinyaga Bar’. Breakfast and lunch are served on the wide verandah, which looks out over the grounds and has a view of Mount Kenya.

Child-friendly: The hotel welcomes children. Conference and event facilities: The hotel has its conference facility.

What to see and do/ Activities: The hotel has an outdoor swimming pool, a snooker room, squash and tennis courts, billiards, and badminton. On the grounds, there is also a replica of Kikuyu Village where dance displays are given. Nature walks can also be taken in the gorge of the Chania River. Fishing expeditions can be arranged as can tours of coffee farms or golf at the nearby scenic Nyeri Golf Course.
