Reteti Elephant Sanctuary 1 Day Flying Excursion

Reteti Elephant Sanctuary 1-Day Flying Excursion:  Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is located in the remote region of northern Kenya, in Samburu County. The sanctuary is situated in the Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust, which covers an area of over 2,000 square kilometers. The nearest towns to Reteti Elephant Sanctuary are Maralal and Wamba, located about 100 and 120 kilometers away.
The sanctuary can be accessed by road, with the nearest airports being in Samburu and Nanyuki. Visitors can also fly to Nairobi and take a connecting flight to Samburu or Nanyuki airstrip. From there, visitors can arrange a private transfer or take a public bus to Maralal or Wamba, then arrange a private transfer to Reteti Elephant Sanctuary. Another option is to take a safari tour that includes a visit to Reteti Elephant Sanctuary. African Spice Safaris offers packages that include transportation to and from the sanctuary. This is a convenient option for those who want to combine their visit to the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary with a safari at Samburu National Reserve.

Reteti Elephant Sanctuary 1 Day Flying Excursion

Reteti Elephant Sanctuary 1-Day Flying Excursion is a great day trip to visit a Samburu community-owned and run wildlife sanctuary in Northern Kenya. Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is located in Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy in the remote Mathews Range and is Kenya’s second-largest elephant population.

Reteti aims to rescue, reunite, rehabilitate, and rewild orphaned and abandoned elephant calves whilst creating much-needed benefits for the local people who live alongside them. Young elephants can become lost or abandoned for several reasons.

Very sadly, some lose their mothers to illegal poaching or as a result of the resource-based conflict. Others get trapped in water wells when they try to drink and are abandoned when their herds’ attempts to rescue them are unsuccessful. Some may lose their families to natural causes, drought, or disease.

The primary objective is to see elephant calves growing up in the wild under the care of their elephant families, so Reteti always tries and reunite a calf with their herd if circumstances allow, and only bring them to the Reteti if they need urgent medical attention or their families cannot be found.

Visiting the Sanctuary is not only an incredible addition to your safari but one of the best ways to safeguard the wildlife in the area, as well as support the local community dedicated to protecting them. Guests get an exclusive opportunity to witness feeding and playtime at the Sanctuary, as well as an in-depth look behind the scenes.

A typical excursion includes a short flight, departing from Nanyuki, Lewa Downs Wildlife Conservancy, or from the lodge/ camp where you are staying to Reteti Elephant Sanctuary Airstrip. The scenic flight gives you a different perspective of the wild undiscovered North of Kenya, and the bonus of an aerial safari can only be a good thing.

The bush planes are great because the wings are above the windows which allow for unobstructed viewing of the stunning scenery below. During your visit, you will be paired with a keeper who will tell you about our work and answer any questions.

From our viewing platform, you will watch the elephants come in from their bushwalk to receive their bottles and then have mud hole playtime. Afterward, you will be given a behind-the-scenes tour of the sanctuary. Later you will take off and head back to your original destination.
