Rock Side Camp Voi
Rock Side Camp Voi is a tented safari accommodation located at the foot of a rocky kopje known as Kale 1 hill with amazing views of the Taita Hills, next to the Tsavo East National Park. If you make the effort to climb the Kopje, you will be rewarded by the magnificent panoramic view of the dense bushland of the Taru Desert, with Sagalla Hills, Taita Hills, and – on a clear day – the top of Kilimanjaro in the background.
The camp is about 128 km from Mombasa up the Mombasa/ Nairobi road to Maungu village, then another 10 km up a dirt road. Nairobi is 375 km to Voi town, then another 29 km past Voi to Maungu village.
The camp is only a 30-minute drive to Voi and the Bachuma gate of the Tsavo East National Park. Mark & Nana Tozer established Rock Side Camp in 1986. The Camp has been a base for hunting safaris since 1974.
Rock Side Camp consists of 16 cozy wooden bandas and 7 new luxury bungalows, all with en suite facilities, each with a mosquito net and furnished verandah. The bathrooms are en-suite with a flush toilet and showers. The bungalows have a seating area.
Guests can enjoy their meals in the dining area, which is an attractive open building centering on a large rock that supports the thatched roof. The well-stocked bar has soft drinks, beers, wines, and spirits. The camp’s specialty is the Rockside Sunset Cocktail.
The roof is supported by a huge rock, which forms the center of the building. If the weather permits it, the camp serves evening Barbecues under the stars. Guests can relax by the pool or at the bar, and in the evenings watch the most sensational sunset. All meals are served in an open building, sheltered by a Makuti roof.
The outdoor swimming pool has sun beds and chairs and offers astonishing views of the Taita Hills as well as Mt. Kilimanjaro on a clear day.
Rock Side Camp Voi activities include climbing the Kopje, bush walks, or for those who enjoy bird watching, there have been 84 species spotted in one single morning. We highly recommend our breathtaking guided hiking trips up the 7.900 feet high Mount Kasigao, with its unique flora and fauna.
Other activities include visiting Tsavo East National Park on a game drive where the iconic ‘red’ elephants roam alongside lions, leopards, and a plethora of other wildlife.
Bird watching for bird enthusiasts, Tsavo East is nothing short of a bird’s paradise. Home to over 500 bird species, including the rare Vulturine Guineafowl and the majestic Martial Eagle, visiting attractions in Tsavo East National Park, such as Mudanda Rock, Lugard Falls, Crocodile Point, Aruba Dam, Yatta Plateau, River Galana, and Kanderi Swamp.
Walking safaris allow you to explore the park on foot, giving you a unique opportunity to connect with nature up close. Other activities include visiting nearby Maasai villages or Taita communities to learn about the traditional ways of life, see cultural dances, and discover the rich heritage. Explore the Galana River with a boat or canoe safari, where you can spot hippos, crocodiles.
