Rubondo Island National Park is one of two Tanzanian national parks located on an island in Lake Victoria. Rubondo Island is located in the south-western corner of Lake Victoria, Tanzania. (the second-largest lake in Africa, after Lake Tanganyika). Rubondo Island is about 150 km west of Mwanza.
Rubondo Island can be reached by park boat from two different locations. One option is the boat from Kasenda, a small village near Muganza in Chato District. The other option is the boat from Nkome in Geita District. By airplane, Rubondo Airstrip can be reached with Auric Air or Coastal Aviation.
Rubondo Island boasts a number of indigenous species such as hippo, bushbuck, vervet, sitatunga, crocodiles, elephants, chimpanzees, giraffes, black and white colobus monkeys, suni and grey parrots, buffalos, bushpig, hyrax, warthog, and large spotted genet cat.
Approximately over 200 species of indigenous and migrant birds can be observed either breeding or passing through the National Park. The Island has an abundance of herons, storks, ibises, egrets, cormorants, kingfishers, and birds of prey. However, it is believed that the park has the highest density of fish eagles in the world.
Rubondo Island Camp is the only lodge on Rubondo Island National Park. A small and exclusive camp consists of just eight waterfront cottages overlooking the vast waters of Lake Victoria. As the only camp in the wild and virtually uninhabited Rubondo Island National Park, it is a truly special place to experience.
