Samburu Game Reserve Road Safari 3 Days 2 Nights Tour from Nairobi

Our 3-days/2-nights road safari from Nairobi to Samburu Game Reserve departs early morning, features:
✓ 6-hour drive with stops at the equator
✓  2-3 game drives per day
✓ Spotting the “Samburu Special Five” (Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy’s Zebra, Beisa Oryx, Somali Ostrich, Gerenuk)

Samburu National Reserve Highlights

Set in Kenya’s rugged north, Samburu National Reserve may be compact in size, but it consistently punches above its weight for safari experiences. The reserve’s arid landscapes are shaped by the Ewaso Ng’iro River, a permanent water source that draws wildlife year-round and creates natural gathering points for game viewing.

Open terrain, sparse vegetation, and relatively low visitor numbers mean sightings are often clear, close, and refreshingly uncrowded. Combined with rare northern species, strong predator presence, and dramatic scenery, Samburu delivers a rewarding, authentic Kenya safari that feels wild, intimate, and far removed from the busier southern circuits.

✓  Strong birdlife with over 450 recorded species
✓  Cultural connections with the Samburu people
✓  A quieter, more off-the-beaten-track Kenya safari experience
✓  Striking semi-arid landscapes broken by the Ewaso Ng’iro River
✓  Excellent wildlife sightings of elephant, lion, leopard, and cheetah
✓ The Samburu Special Five: Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and gerenuk

Samburu National Reserve

Venture off the beaten track to Samburu National Reserve, located in northern Kenya, on this 3-day road safari from Nairobi. Samburu Reserve is situated on the hot, arid fringes of Kenya’s vast Northern Frontier District. The reserve covers 40 Square Miles (104 km²) and is located 350 km north of Nairobi, within Isiolo District.

Samburu is not particularly well–known and is therefore not too crowded  a huge plus in Kenya where so many reserves are often overflowing with tourists. It is often grouped with the Buffalo Springs and Shaba National Reserves, as they lie so close together.

The reserve is rich in wildlife, renowned for its abundance of rare northern specialist species such as the Grevy’s Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Reticulated Giraffe, Gerenuk, and the Beisa Oryx (also known as the Samburu Special).

The reserve is also popular, with a minimum of 900 elephants. Large predators such as the Lion, Leopard, and Cheetah are an important attraction (Kamunyak, the Miracle Lioness that adopted the baby Oryx, is a resident in the reserve).

Wild dog sightings are also a common attraction to this unique protected area. Bird life is abundant, with over 450 species recorded. Birds of the arid northern bush country are augmented by a number of riverine forest species. The Lesser Kestrel and the Taita Falcon are species of global conservation concern, and both use the reserve.

The area is home to the Samburu tribe, a pastoral people related to the Masai. Samburu Reserve, as a safari destination, features a rugged, dramatic landscape; the Ewaso Nyiro River runs along its southern boundary.
