Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary

A perfect addition to a charming beach holiday, this short 3-day road safari experience offers you the chance to visit Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, located approximately 220 kilometers from Mombasa.

The sanctuary is adjacent to Tsavo West National Park and the LUMO Community Wildlife Sanctuary. It hosts cape buffalo, elephant, leopard, Masai lion, Masai giraffe, zebra, hartebeest, impala, waterbuck, Thomson’s gazelle, lesser kudu, dik-dik, and other smaller animals, as well as a great diversity of birdlife.

Our 3-day Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary safari includes road transport in a minibus or 4×4 safari vehicle, the services of our professional safari driver-guide, 2 nights’ full-board accommodation in a superb-quality, well-located lodge/camp (Salt Lick Game Lodge or Taita Hills Game Lodge), game drives, and park entrance fees.

The tour begins and ends in Mombasa. Depart from Mombasa early in the morning for Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary. Spend 2 days on activities such as:

Day 1: Mombasa or Nairobi – Drive to Taita Hills Game Sanctuary

0800 Hours; After a hearty breakfast at your hotel in Mombasa, you will depart by road to Taita Hills Game Sanctuary. Have lunch on arrival at Taita Hills Lodge. After lunch, game drive in the sanctuary until sunset. During our afternoon game drive, you may see lions, cheetahs, baboons, giraffes, elephants, etc.

Dinner and overnight at Sarova Salt Lick Game Lodge. Salt Lick Lodge is especially memorable for its imaginative structure. A complex of rondavels sits on stilts over a series of water holes. The two-store towers, topped by peaked thatch roofs, are connected by open-air bridges, creating an African fantasy of a medieval fortress.

The lodge has been built with game viewing in mind – you can see animals in all directions because it offers spectacular open views.

Day 2: Explore Taita Hills Game Sanctuary

Today we enjoy a full day in the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary on morning and afternoon game drives. Taita Hills conservancy is home to cape buffalo, African bush elephant, African leopard, Masai lion, Tanzanian cheetah, Masai giraffe, zebra, hartebeest, impala, waterbuck, Thomson’s gazelle, lesser kudu, dik-dik, and other smaller animals, as well as a great diversity of birdlife.

Optional extra-cost activities include a night game drive, a visit to Lumo Conservancy, or a visit to Tsavo West National Park.

The sanctuary has a great diversity of birdlife as it borders Tsavo West National Park. Lunchtime finds us back at our lodge.

1400 Hours: After lunch, we depart by road back to Mombasa.
