Tarangire Wildlife & Birds

Tarangire hosts a good variety of predators in sizeable populations. Frequent predator sightings in Tarangire include lions, leopards, and spotted hyenas. Cheetahs are occasionally sighted in the park’s southern region, and wild dogs are occasionally seen. 

Elephants are common and can be sighted year-round. There are about 2,500 elephants in the larger Tarangire ecosystem, covering about 25,000 km². The game park is home to lots of zebras and wildebeest, as well as plenty of giraffes, buffalo, waterbucks, elands, and impalas. 

A variety of other antelope species are also found in the park, including greater and lesser kudu, Thompson’s gazelle, hartebeest, and reedbuck. The park is the only place in Tanzania where the unusual gerenuk, with its long neck, and the fringe-eared oryx are regularly spotted. Dwarf mongoose and red-and-yellow barbet are often seen inhabiting old termite mounds.

The swamp areas of Tarangire remain relatively green year-round, attracting more than 500 bird species. These swamps host the largest number of breeding bird species worldwide. 
 Common sightings include yellow-collared lovebirds found in the riverine vegetation along the Tarangire River.

Rufous-tailed weavers and ashy starlings are also endemic to this part of Tanzania. In the drier areas, Kori bustards, ostriches, and ground hornbills are often sighted.

Day Game Drives: Large populations of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, giraffe, eland, impala, and warthog all go in search of water. Lion and hyena follow accordingly. Perhaps most impressive are the large herds of elephants that congregate along the riverbanks – it is sometimes possible to see over 500 in a day.

Bird Watching: There is plenty of colorful bird life. Yellow-billed and saddle-billed storks are often found in the river, and orange-bellied parrots and red-and-yellow barbets in the acacia woodland.

Night Game Drives: There’s also the opportunity to see some of Tanzania’s famous ‘nightlife’ on unforgettable night drives in Tarangire.

Walking Safari: The privilege of walking in these natural areas gives you an exhilarating feeling of adventure. Although you’ll usually get close to large mammals such as elephants, giraffes, buffalo, or even lions, walking safaris are very safe.

Experienced guides and an armed National Park ranger will accompany you on every walk. Walking safaris can take an hour or a whole morning or afternoon.

Tarangire National Park 1 Day Safari Itinerary

0730 Hours: Depart Arusha or Moshi by road to Tarangire National Park. The Distance from Arusha is 130 kilometres, and from Moshi it is 210 Kilometres.

1000 Hours: Arrive at the park and proceed on a game drive. Wildlife to be seen includes elephants, tree-climbing pythons, leopards, zebras, giraffes, dik-diks, ostriches, and various bird species.

1300 Hours: Around lunchtime, you will stop at a suitable picnic site to enjoy your lunch boxes and proceed on another game drive.

Tarangire is popular as a birding destination. There are over 550 bird species found here, which include the Kori bustard, the heaviest flying bird in the world, ostriches, etc.

1600 Hours: Depart the park and proceed to Arusha

1830 Hours: Arrive in Arusha and transfer you to your Hotel/ Residence.
