Tea Farm Day Tour Karai Tea Estate Tigoni Kenya lies on the rolling hills of the Limuru highlands at an altitude of 7,000 feet about 40 km north of Nairobi. The 170–acre Karai Tea Estate lies on the very front of Riara Ridge in the heart of Tigoni’s rural tea-growing belt. From an altitude of 2000 meters, visitors enjoy stunning views of verdant tea fields stretching out to the city on the southern horizon and the prominent Ngong Hills to the southwest. Karai Tea Estate Farm offers tea tours and nature walks, and in addition to the tea, the plantation has a large area of forest cover consisting of eucalyptus, wattle bark, and indigenous trees. The forest provides a home for a wide variety of animals including the rare and endangered Colobus monkeys.

The tea farm tour begins when guests meet at Limuru Girls School at 1030 hours followed by a short transfer to the Karai farm. At 1100 hours guests are welcomed with refreshments, followed by information about tea production and farming in Kenya. Next, a walk in the tea plantations to see the growth of tea plants from seedlings in the nursery to mature plants in the tea field. You are free to plant tea seedlings and pick tea. Later learn more about the history of the Tigoni–Limuru area. After hearty Farmhouse lunch, you get an opportunity to buy your very own brand of Kerai Tea. Karai Tea Farm tours are offered on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays and require 48 hours’ notice and payment in advance before arrival. Bookings require a minimum of 6 guests.

Our 1 day Tea farm tour takes us north of Nairobi into the tea-growing region of the Kenyan Highlands. The 170-acre Karai Tea Estate is located 40 km from Nairobi, on the very front of Riara Ridge in the heart of Tigoni’s rural tea-growing belt. The driving time from Nairobi to Karai Tea Estate takes about an hour and 20 minutes  (36.6 km) via Limuru Road and Banana Raini Road.

From an altitude of 2000 meters, visitors enjoy stunning views of verdant tea fields stretching out to the city on the southern horizon and the prominent Ngong Hills to the southwest. Karai farm is bordered on two sides by perennial rivers with woodland areas.

Tea is plucked daily (except Sundays) by a team of over 60 resident workers before being transported to the adjacent Maramba Tea Factory for processing. Starting daily at 1100 hours, your Karai experience includes:

Our 1 day Tea farm tour is a guided tea estate that starts at 1100 hours and finishes by 1500 hours and includes a farmhouse lunch that needs to be pre-booked. The daily time begins at 11 am sharp.

The tour agenda includes an introduction to tea production and picking as well as the history of Kenyan tea, forest nature trails with serene waterfalls, and amazing views over tea fields to Nairobi and the Ngong Hills. We also encourage visitors to go green, reduce our carbon footprints, and offer support tools and ideas.

FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions)

1. What time does the tour start?

The Karai Tea Farm tour begins when guests meet at Limuru Girls School at 1030 hours followed by a short transfer to the Karai farm and ends by 1500 hours


2. What days are you closed?

Karai Tea Farm is closed every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday and requires 48 hours’ notice and payment in advance before arrival.


3. Do I really have to pre-book?

Yes! Our online booking closes at 6 pm the night before a tour. If it is a last-minute plan for that day you are welcome to phone us in the morning to see if we have availability that day.


4. How do I get there?

The easiest way to get here is by car. Book our transport services which include a driver who will wait for you whilst on the tour. Please note if you get an Uber here it is unlikely you will be able to get an Uber back! If you are traveling on Matatu from Nairobi get the 116 and get off at the bottom of Girls School Road (Kenchic Stop) and catch a Boda Boda up the hill to Limuru Girls School.


5. Is the walk strenuous?

No, the walk to the indigenous forest and the tea farm plantation is not strenuous at all, just watch out for roots and the occasional safari ants.


6. Can I come at another time?

Our Tea farm tour starts at 1100 Hours and ends at 1500 Hours


7. Karai Tea Farm Lunch?

We serve a hot buffet lunch for our tea farm tour guests. Lunch starts with homemade vegetable soup and bread rolls then a mix of meat and vegetable dishes followed by cheese & biscuits and homemade ice cream & puddings, tea, and coffee.


8. Can you cater to dietary requirements?

Please let us know on the booking form if you are vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, gluten-free or have any other allergies.


9. What’s the weather like?

At the Tea farm it’s a little colder than in Nairobi as we are at 7,200 feet so bring a sweater with you!


10. Can I bring my dog?

Kindly do not bring your dog or any other pets to the farm. The farm dogs don’t appreciate other dogs being here and many of our guests do not like pets.


11. Do you hold weddings and events?

No, we do not hold other events at the farm.


12. Do you do accommodation?

No, we don’t offer accommodation but there are lots of Hotels, Lodges & Camps in the area. Request us for reservations in Tigoni or Limuru area.
