Tsavo West National Park Safari 3 Days 2 Nights from Nairobi offers you a rare opportunity to visit one of Kenya’s most renowned game-viewing areas – Tsavo West National Park, located 250 km from Nairobi.
Travel Time: The drive from Nairobi or Mombasa typically takes 4–5 hours. This driving safari from Nairobi uses the Mtito Andei Gate. Tsavo West National Park is situated west of its sister, Tsavo East National Park.
Tsavo West National Park covers 7,065 square kilometers and encompasses mountains and hills for climbing, savanna bush and semi-arid desert scrub, acacia woodland, palm thickets, rivers, and the tranquil Lake Jipe.
The region is also home to an incredibly important water source – the Mzima Springs. The springs produce approximately 50 million gallons of water a day – 30 million of which are piped to Mombasa.
The source of the springs is the ice cap on Kilimanjaro and the rains that fall on the Chyulu Hills, which soak into the porous volcanic rock, forming subterranean rivers. The springs attract hippos, barbel fish, and crocodiles, and an underwater viewing platform lets you see them.
The best observation time is in the early morning before the hippos get too hot and shelter themselves out of sight in the surrounding papyrus cover. There are many tourist attractions in Tsavo West National Park, from safari tours to see the red elephants to bird watching and hill hiking to caving and boating.
Wildlife includes cheetah, buffalo, oryx, eland, zebra, leopard, spotted hyena, elephants, kongoni, waterbuck, impala, duiker, and klipspringer. The lions of Tsavo may once have been infamous, but when the rains have fallen and the grass is long, they are very difficult to spot.
Our 3-day Tsavo West National Park driving package includes transport in our 6-seater pop-up roof Mini-van safari vehicle or 4×4 safari vehicle (on request), drive from Nairobi to Tsavo West National Park, 2 nights full board accommodation at a lodge or camp in Tsavo West National Park, game drives with an experienced driver guide & Tsavo West National Park fees.
Tsavo West National Park Highlights
Tsavo West Game Drives: Tsavo West is home to the largest population of red elephants as well as to members of the rest of the “Big 5” African animals (buffalo, African lions, leopards, and rhinos).
There are other animals, such as hippos, cheetahs, hartebeest, and buffalo.
Lake Jipe: Lake Jipe attracts a wide variety of wildlife and is a good place for birdwatching. It is fed by the run-off from Mount Kilimanjaro and the North Pare Mountains.
Take a boat excursion on the lake, or explore the swamps at each end.
Mzima Springs: Mzima Springs is at the north end of Tsavo West. Water from the Chyulu Hills runs from beneath the lava ridge and forms several natural pools.
Fringed with palm trees, these pools are popular watering holes for birds and African wildlife. You can also watch the hippos bathing underwater here.
Lava Flows and Caves: Visit the Lava Flows and Caves for geological interest; explore the caves or hike along with the lava flow.
Bird watching safaris: The park has many migratory birds, including African skimmers, red and yellow bishops, goshawks, buffalo weavers, and palm nut vultures, to name a few.
Over 500 bird species have been recorded in the park, including ostriches, kestrels, buzzards, starlings, weavers, kingfishers, hornbills, secretary birds, and herons.
Cliff faces in Tsavo West: These offer some of the best rock climbing in Kenya. The views over the savanna plains are spectacular, and Mt. Kilimanjaro can occasionally be seen.
