Zanzibar Cooking Class Tour Experience (3 Hours) Learn to cook 4-5 Local Dishes

Our 1-Day Zanzibar Cooking Class Tour takes 3-4 hours and offers an immersive experience that starts with a visit to a local market to pick fresh ingredients, followed by a guided tour of a spice farm.

Guests, often in local homes or rural kitchens (like Jambiani or Stone Town), learn to cook authentic Swahili dishes over charcoal, focusing on coconut-based curries, seafood, and spiced rice.

The Zanzibar cooking class tour is a multi-sensory experience that typically combines a visit to a local market, a guided spice farm tour, and a hands-on Swahili cooking lesson.

You will typically learn to prepare 4-5 traditional dishes—such as Pilau rice, Octopus curry, and Coconut-based stews—using fresh ingredients you harvested or purchased yourself.

Zanzibar Cooking Class Spice Farm Tour

This tour includes a cooking class on the spice farm + a tour of the spice farms. You begin at Stone Town’s Darajani market, which is Zanzibar’s main market – a hive of activity, with everything – from spices, fresh fish, slabs of meat, etc.

After shopping, we transfer to the Spice Farm and take a walk through the farms to learn more about Zanzibar spices as we smell and test them.

These include varieties of tropical fruits and spices, such as black pepper, coriander, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, vanilla sticks, lemongrass, and nutmeg.

The tour includes transportation, a spice farm tour, a visit to the Darajani market, lunch or dinner (4 recipes), mineral water, and an email with the recipes after the cooking class.

Zanzibar Cooking Class Stone Town Tour

This tour begins with a guided tour of Stone Town for about 1.5 hours to understand the history and culture of the Zanzibari people.

Stone Town became a flourishing centre of trade in the 19th century. It was a hub for the trade of both spices and human beings. Spices are an important aspect of the Zanzibar culture.

When the Arabs arrived, they started large spice plantations, making Zanzibar the world’s biggest exporter of cloves at the time.

Zanzibar cooking is impossible without spices. This cooking class includes visits to spice farms and Zanzibar’s historical sites. You will also visit the main market in Zanzibar, Darajani, to buy ingredients (spices and vegetables).

The tour includes transportation, a Stone Town tour, a market tour, learning four recipes, lunch or dinner, and mineral water after class.

Kendwa Village Tour Zanzibar Cooking Class

This tour begins from Stone Town and transfers to Kendwa in the Northwestern part of Zanzibar. Kendwa is located about 60 km away from Stone Town.

This is a full-day tour that includes visiting local Zanzibaris in their homes to understand their cultures and ways of life. Gain a unique insight into traditional Zanzibar cooking and rural village activities at Kendwa.

Some of the activities in the village include visiting their various NGOs projects, walking and talking to people as they do their daily chores, like women weaving and fish drying, men doing woodwork, visiting a school, children’s hospital, water project, and a beehive.

Later, we enjoy a cooking class and return to the hotel. The tour includes a market tour, community contribution, a guide, and cooking with the chef in the village, return transport from your hotel, and a tour of Kendwa village.

Zanzibar Cooking Class Jambiani East Coast

Your tour begins with pickup from your hotel in Zanzibar. Your guide will take you off the beaten path to the ancient village of Jambiani, a small fishing village on the southeast coast of Zanzibar, about 45 km from Stone Town, the main city.

You’ll also visit the local market to acquire all the necessary ingredients for your class. Your guide will give you tips for selecting the best and freshest vegetables, eggs, spices, fish, and meat. Then it’s time to start cooking!

Your cooking lesson takes place in a fully equipped, typical African kitchen. Under the guidance of your chef, you will learn how to prepare a four-course African meal, including three different types of homemade seafood.

You will also learn how to match each dish with suitable wines, selected from the best local varieties. Of course, no Zanzibar cooking experience would be complete without sampling your creations.

When you have finished in the kitchen, you’ll gather around the table with your fellow aspiring chefs, sip some wine, and taste the delicious African meal you have prepared.
