Zanzibar Mangapwani Coral Cave Nungwi Village Day Detailed Tour Itinerary

Stop 1: Mangapwani Coral Cave & Slave Chamber(Time 1.5 – 3 hours)

Located about 30 minutes north of Stone Town, these sites offer a poignant glimpse into Zanzibar’s past.

Mangapwani Coral Cave: A natural deep cavern with a freshwater pool at the bottom. While originally a water source, it was later used as a secret transit point to hide enslaved people after the official abolition of the slave trade in 1873.

Mangapwani Slave Chamber: Located a few kilometers from the cave, this is a man-made, square underground cell carved from coralline rock. Built around 1880, it was used to pack up to 100 people at a time before they were illegally shipped to slave markets.

Visitor Tips: Wear sturdy, grippy shoes (no flip-flops) as the steps can be slippery and dark. Bringing a personal flashlight is recommended, though guides often provide them.

Stop 2: Nungwi Village & Beach (Time spent 3 – 4 hours)

From Mangapwani, it is approximately a 1-hour drive further north to Nungwi, the liveliest beach destination on the island.

Cultural Village Tour: Visitors can explore the largest village in Zanzibar, witness daily life, visit local schools, and meet traditional dhow boat builders who craft wooden vessels by hand on the beach.

Sea Turtle Sanctuaries: Nungwi is home to the Mnarani Marine Turtle Conservation Pond and Baraka Natural Aquarium, where you can learn about conservation efforts and even swim with rescued hawksbill and green turtles.

Fish Market: A visit to the local market (best in the early morning) reveals a bustling scene where fresh catches like tuna and kingfish are auctioned.

Beach & Sunset: The tour often concludes at Nungwi Beach, known for its turquoise waters and white sand that remains swimmable even during low tide. Many tours offer a private sunset dhow cruise to end the day.

Important Information

Tips: Bring local currency for buying handicrafts or tipping local guides
Footwear: Wear sturdy shoes for cave exploration, as the floor can be slippery
Attire: Modest clothing is recommended when walking through the village, while swimwear is fine on the beach
Zanzibar Mangapwani Coral Cave Nungwi Village Day Tour

Zanzibar Mangapwani Coral Cave Nungwi Village Day Tour takes you to Mangapwani Cave, which lies on the coast, about 20 km north of Zanzibar Town.

After breakfast at your hotel/ residence, we pick you up and transfer you to Mangapwani Village, Zanzibar, a 30-minute drive from Zanzibar Stone Town. Mangapwani cave was a secret hideout where slaves were kept illegally and transported by dhow.

We also visit the Mangapwani Slave Chamber, located a few kilometers further up the coast from the Coral Cave. Although sometimes called the Slave Cave, it is a square-shaped cell carved into coralline rock, with a roof.

It was originally built for storing slaves, and boats from the mainland would unload their human cargo on the nearby beach. The slaves would be kept here before being taken to Zanzibar Town for resale or to plantations on the island.

It is thought that sometime after 1873, when Sultan Barghash signed the Anglo–Zanzibar treaty, which officially abolished the slave trade, the cave was used as a place to hide slaves, as an illicit trade continued for many years.

After a tour of the Slave Cave, we drive you to Nungwi Fishing village, which is an hour’s drive from the cave. Though the village is known for a number of things, probably the most famous reason to visit Nungwi is to enjoy one of Zanzibar’s most spectacular beaches.

Nungwi beach has crystal clear turquoise ocean water, where you will have the opportunity to swim in the warm water.

We enjoy a guided walking tour of the village, which takes a couple of hours, and visit the local market, the area where men make dhow sailboats, and the area where women make baskets. We also see several schools and mosques.

Taking a Nungwi village tour is a great way to see local life. We also visit the Mnarani Natural Aquarium and get to see sea turtles up close. After the tour, you will have free time to relax on the white-sand beach on the northeast coast and have lunch at any restaurant of your choice (not included in the price).
