Our 2-Day Gombe Stream National Park Chimpanzee Safari travels to one of Tanzania’s smallest National Parks, located in western Tanzania, 10 miles (20 km) north of Kigoma, the regional capital of western Tanzania.
Gombe Stream National Park is set against the backdrop of the stunning Mahale Mountains and covers only 52 square kilometers, located on the western border of Tanzania and the Congo, situated on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. It is a narrow strip of mountainous country bounded in the east by the crest of the eastern Rift Valley escarpment, and in the west by Lake Tanganyika.
Gombe Stream National Park offers some fantastic chimpanzee tracking located on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. As you enjoy your walking safari, you will also encounter several other animals from pythons to baboons, bushbucks, dik-diks, forest pigs, small antelopes, and primates, like the blue monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, red colobus, and mammals.
The park’s birdlife is extraordinary, as there is a great crossover of East African grassland birds and West African forest species. A checklist of 200 bird species includes a fish eagle, palm nut vulture, Peter’s twinspot, etc all of which are frequent around camp.
Day 1 of your tour begins with a flight from Kilimanjaro International Airport, Arusha Airport, or Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam then followed by a domestic flight to Kigoma Airport. You then transfer to Kibirizi port in Kigoma for a private 1-hour motorboat transfer directly to Gombe Stream National Park.
After lunch, the afternoon is spent looking for chimpanzee families that live and are protected inside the park’s boundaries and the other species of primates that live in these tropical forests. Later in the evening, you will head to your lodge/camp for dinner and overnight.
Day 2 begins with breakfast, then followed by a boat transfer to Kigoma town. Upon arrival, you will be picked up and driven to the airport for your flight back to Dar es Salaam/ Arusha or Kilimanjaro Airport. This is where your safari comes to a close.
2 Days Gombe Stream National Park Chimpanzee Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Dar es Salaam Fly to Kigoma – Boat transfer to Gombe Stream National Park
0700 Hours: Pick up from the hotel in Dar es Salaam. Transfer to Dar es Salaam airport for your scheduled flight to Kigoma.
0905 Hours: Arrive at Kigoma airport. Pick up on arrival and transfer to Kibirizi port
1000 Hours: Departure by boat to Gombe National Park. The boat ride to Gombe Stream National Park (takes about two hours depending on the weather).
1200 Hours: Upon arrival, you will be met by our skilled guide who will escort you to the entrance gate for registration and park fees.
1300 Hours: Hot lunches at the camp.
1400 Hours: Proceed for Chimpanzee tracking in the forest. Gombe Stream’s main attraction is obviously the chimpanzee families that live protected within the park’s boundaries. Visitors take walks deep into the forest to observe and sit with the extraordinary primates for an entire morning.
Apart from chimpanzee viewing, many other species of primates live in Gombe Stream’s tropical forests. Vervet and colobus monkeys, baboons, forest pigs, and dik-dik inhabit the dense forest and a wide variety of tropical birdlife. You also have the advantage of visiting the Kakombe waterfall and the memorable peak for Jane Goodall.

Day 2: Gombe Boat Ride Transfer to Kigoma – Fly to Dar es salaam
