Kakamega Rainforest Reserve

4 Days Kisumu Kit Mikaye Ndere Island Kakamega Road Safari begins from Nairobi and travels to Kisumu, the 3rd largest city of Kenya after Nairobi and Mombasa. Kisumu is 350 km from Nairobi. Along the way, we make a stop at Kit-Mikayi – a sacred site for the local Luo community. 

Kit-Mikayi, also spelt Kit Mikayi, Kitmikayi, and Kitmikaye, is a rock formation (a tor) around 120 meters high situated along the Kisumu-Bondo highway, roughly 30 km from the Kisumu Central Business District.

Kit-Mikayi’s name is a Luo dialect meaning ‘The Stone of the First Wife’. This Impressive rock formation holds great historical significance, and a visit offers an opportunity to learn more about Luo culture and beliefs.

Other places of interest on this tour include a visit to the Ndere Island National Park on Lake Victoria, which is a haven for birds. Over 100 different species of birds can be seen here, including African fish eagles, black-headed gonoleks, and grey-headed kingfishers.

Ndere Island shores on Lake Victoria support a wide variety of animals, including hippos, monitor lizards, Nile crocodiles, several fish species, snakes, baboons, impalas, the rare sitatunga antelopes, waterbucks, zebras, and warthogs.

A visit to the Kakamega rainforest is also included on the tour. This forest is the only tropical rain forest in Kenya of the Guinean-Congolian type, which once stretched from West Africa to East Africa.

Kakamega Forest has over 360 species of birds, including Great blue turaco, Blue-headed bee-eater, Turners Eremomela, Yellow-bellied wattle-eye, African shrike-flycatcher, Petit’s cuckoo-shrike, and many others.

Mammals of Kakamega rain forest include primates, bushbuck, Red and blue Duikers, Bush pigs, porcupines, and at night, flying squirrels, hammer-headed fruit bats, Tree pangolins, poto, Mongoose along the rivers, and clawless otter.

4 Days Kisumu Kit Mikaye Ndere Island Kakamega Road Safari Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi – Kit Mikaye – Drive to Kisumu

After breakfast, depart Nairobi for Kisumu town. Today you will visit Kit Mikayi, a large rock with three rocks on top. It stands tall above many surrounding rocks in Kangeso village.

Kit Mikayi is a Mysterious rock formation located in a village about 30 km from Kisumu, the 3rd-largest city in Kenya after Nairobi and Mombasa. Kit Mikayi means “Stone of the First Wife”.

We hike to the top of the rock formations, enjoy the scenery, and learn the cultural significance of the site for the Luo community.  Later, drive to your Kisumu hotel for dinner and accommodation.

Day 2: Kisumu – Drive to Ndere Island National Park

After breakfast, trek to the lakeshore, then catch a boat to Ndere Island National Park. Located on Lake Victoria, this island is a haven for birds.

Ndere Island provides beautiful scenic views of the Homa hills to the south, Mageta Island to the east, and glimpses of Kampala in Uganda beyond the southwest horizon.

The lakeshore supports a wide variety of animals, including hippos, monitor lizards, Nile crocodiles, several fish species, snakes, baboons, impalas, the rare sitatunga antelopes, waterbucks, zebras, and warthogs.

It is ideal for nature walks, bird watching, rock climbing, research, and spiritual pilgrimages. Kakamega rain forest is the only tropical rain forest in Kenya of the Guinean-Congolian type, which once stretched from West Africa to East Africa.
