Campi Ya Kanzi Camp

Campi ya Kanzi Camp is an owner-built and runs a 5-star luxury Tented safari camp located on Maasai land, which means that it remains one of the last unspoiled areas of Africa. Connecting three national parks (Tsavo West National Park, Chyulu Hills National Park & Amboseli National Park), the property is home to a vast wildlife and birdlife population.

The camp lies within Kuku Group Ranch, 283,000 acres in the Tsavo Amboseli ecosystem. Campi ya Kanzi is located about 322 km from Nairobi. Mount Kilimanjaro is about 56.4 km away from the camp.

The camp is usually accessed by a 55-minute charter flight from Wilson Airport using the camp’s plane and lands on its own private airstrip, which is a 15-minute drive from the camp. Campi ya Kanzi means “Camp of the Hidden Treasure” in Kiswahili.

For you, it means “safari in style” at a luxury tented safari camp. The main goal of Campi ya Kanzi is to protect the land of the Maasai of Kuku Group Ranch, to enable the Maasai community to keep living according to their traditions, if they so wish.

Campi ya Kanzi Location

You will be in one of the most iconic places for a safari. Campi ya Kanzi is just 35 miles away from 19,341 ft Kilimanjaro, resting on the foothills of the Chyulu Hills (Hemingway’s Green Hills of Africa). Lions, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, and all types of antelopes populate the area. This is a place you do not want to miss on your safari!

The volcanic Chyulu Hills flank the property. Over and above the big game and the plains game, the area offers many rare species, including wild dog, lesser kudu, and cheetah, all of which thrive on the ranch.

Campi ya Kanzi: How to get there

Our airplane (Cessna 206) or by charter, 1 1-hour flight from Nairobi (or Mombasa, or Malindi) – 30 minutes from Tanzania (Namanga).

Campi ya Kanzi Accommodations

Campi ya Kanzi accommodates a maximum of 16 guests in 6 luxury tented cottages and 2 luxury tented suites (The Hemingway and Simba suites). The first one is named after the famous author who wrote of the nearby Chyulu Hills in his book “Green Hills of Africa”, the latter one is named after the Swahili name for Lion. Each tented cottage enjoys a different view and accommodates one or two adults. An extra bed can be added for a child.

Each tent features either twin beds or a king-size bed, made at the camp with local logs, and presented with specially-made linen imported from Italy. A table, two safari chairs, a colonial trunk, shelves and hangers, and daily fresh flowers complete the interior décor. Each tent has a dressing room. Each tented cottage has a wide veranda to provide superb views of either Mt. Kilimanjaro, the Tsavo Hills, and the Chyulu Hills. Electricity is provided by solar, 220-volt (plugs and sockets are 2-pin Italian).

Each tented cottage has a dedicated Maasai attendant assigned to it. Tents are named after the view from the verandas, from Chlu Hills to Kiliimanjaro. Complimentary WiFi. Coffee/ tea station. 

Campi ya Kanzi Activities and Safari

Campi ya Kanzi and our sister lodge, Chyulu Club, are the only ones in a 400,000-acre Maasai wilderness. Guests will enjoy genuine African wilderness in exclusivity, away from the zoo safari experience of crowded National Parks.

Included activities: game drives in EVs, game walks, forest walks, and horseback riding. Maasai village visits. Excluded: massages, scenic flights, excursions to Tsavo National Park and Amboseli National Park.

Campi ya Kanzi Personal Hosting

You will not be in a hotel, but in our homes in the bush. ‘We are Luca and Antonella (founders) and the Maasai (landlords of this paradise), and we will, collectively, be your hosts. All activities will be tailor-made to your desires, from classic game drives in many different habitats to lovely game walks with your Maasai guide and tracker!

Campi ya Kanzi Dining and bars

Part of the open plan, high-ceiling main living area, the large dining table is surrounded by leather-cushioned safari chairs – dining is communal. Owned and run by an Italian couple, the camp specializes in Italian cuisine, local and international dishes. Meals are taken in Tembo House, where the ‘fine dining’ experience includes the use of crystal glasses, fine table settings, and candles.

The camp’s cooks are specially trained in the preparation of fine Italian cuisine (homemade fresh pasta, risotto, biscuits, bread, ice-cream…), which are featured alongside International and local dishes. Fresh daily vegetables are supplied by the camp’s own organic vegetable and herb garden, as well as fresh dairy produce from the organic dairy and farm. Wines are from South Africa and also from the Italian vineyards of the camp owners, which are specially bottled for Campi ya Kanzi.

Tembo (“elephant”) House is the heart of the camp. The clubhouse has a thatched roof and is beautifully constructed from local materials such as lava rocks and native timbers (collected in a National Forest where there is a sustainable plantation). Open to the outdoors, Tembo House enjoys spectacular views of Kilimanjaro and offers a large lounge featuring a library of books on Africa.

The Tented Cottages and Suites are conveniently located, with ample space between them, to ensure every guest’s privacy. Featuring a safe, flashlight, work desk, wooden chest, safari literature, en-suite bathroom, private veranda, and a Maasai attendant. The tented suites have a sitting area and a wardrobe.

The cottages are named after the beautiful view of the specific hills that they face: Chyulu, Longitok, Olenyo Waite, Kilimanjaro, Oldonyo Oibor, and Ololorami. There are 4 types of accommodation with different settings: Luxury Tented Cottages, Tented Suites, House Pool cottages, and Private villas.

Kanzi House is an exclusive villa available to larger groups, and families on holiday who would like to stay under one roof and dine privately. It can be booked only by one party at a time for a minimum of three nights. Or it can be booked individually: the pool cottage for a couple, the private villa for up to four guests.

The swimming pool suite accommodates up to 3 guests and features an 18-meter swimming pool, a fire pit, an en-suite bathroom, and a massage boma. Alfresco dining is available next to the pool or in the open dining area.

The camp has an onsite restaurant that serves local and international dishes and a well-stocked bar that offers a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. There is also an outdoor pool, a shared lounge area, and a spa
