Kampala 1 Day Trips Budongo Forest Chimpanzee Trekking

Our Budongo Forest Chimpanzee Trekking tour from Kampala takes you to Budongo Forest Reserve, a premier destination for chimpanzee trekking, home to Uganda’s largest chimpanzee population (around 700-800) within Murchison Falls National Park.

Budongo Forest is approximately 3-4 hours by road northwest of Kampala, en route to Murchison Falls National Park. The Forest is the largest surviving natural forest in Uganda, covering approximately 825 square km, of which 430 square km is continuous forest.

The forest is the natural habitat of more than 600 chimpanzees, of which a small community has been habituated for eco-tourism purposes. Budongo Forest has well-developed, extensive trails throughout the forest. This enables one to view chimpanzees in their natural environment.

Other primates that can be observed are the Black-and-White Colobus Monkeys, Olive Baboons, Red-tailed Monkeys, Blue Monkeys, and Grey-cheeked Mangabeys. Also look out for other primates such as Black-and-White Colobus Monkeys and Red-tailed Monkeys, as well as birds, mammal tracks, and more.

Chimpanzee tracking is available daily, with two viewing sessions per day. The hike takes about 2 to 4 hours, depending on chimpanzee movement, and includes the Chimp Habituation Experience in Budongo Forest.

Kampala 1 Day Trips Budongo Forest Chimpanzee Trekking Itinerary

0500 Hours: Depart Kampala after breakfast at your hotel/residence for a 3.5-hour drive north to Budongo Forest (approximately 246 km). The drive through the Ugandan countryside alone is worth the trip to Masindi.

You will travel in a comfortable vehicle and be accompanied by a professional, English-speaking Safari driver-guide. Bottled water will be provided during the safari.

0900 Hours: Arrive at Kaniyo Pabidi at Budongo Forest Reserve. Early morning, you will start the Chimpanzee tracking through the Mahogany Forest. Tracking habituated chimpanzees means the chimps are used to human proximity.

1230 Hours: Relax, then we have lunch.

1400 Hours: Early afternoon: continue chimpanzee tracking through the Mahogany Forest. Tracking habituated chimpanzees means the chimps are used to human proximity. This is a process that takes several years. They are not tame but used to having humans near them.

The guides follow the daily movements of the habituated chimpanzee groups. The trek takes 2 to 4 hours, and we generally expect good sightings of chimps in their natural environment. A maximum of two groups of 6 people depart from the park offices in the afternoon and will be allowed to track chimpanzees with experienced rangers.

The tracking will include one hour with habituated chimpanzees in the wild. The walk may also include viewing other wildlife in the forest under the canopy of the oldest mahogany trees in East Africa.

Each day, chimpanzees like gorillas move to a new location for the night, building new nests. Budongo Forest is a project of both the Jane Goodall Institute and the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Enjoy your time with the chimpanzees. The chimp habituation is a wonderful experience.

You will learn more about the Chimp community and discover our common features!

1700 Hours: After the tracking trip, return to Kampala.

2100 Hours: Arrive back in Kampala
