Samatian Island Lodge Lake Baringo | North of Kampi Ya Samaki town | on Samatian Island | 290 km from Nairobi
Samatian Island Lodge is a peaceful, exclusive retreat set on a private 30-acre island in Lake Baringo, within Kenya’s stunning Great Rift Valley. Owned and run by Ross and Caro Withey, this beautifully crafted sanctuary is a mixed-material construct of doum palm, fallen wood, and stone, passionately designed to create a refuge from the sun while offering uninterrupted scenic views.
The lodge is carefully positioned with breathtaking views across the calm freshwater lake to the imposing, dramatic backdrop of the Laikipia Escarpment. Samatian blends rustic charm with the raw beauty of the wilderness, serving as an oasis of calm amid Africa’s harsh beauty.
A new outdoor swimming pool is embedded in the landscape, offering the perfect spot to cool off in the Baringo heat. Whether sipping a drink in the breezy mess or watching magnificent birdlife from your private veranda, guests are immersed in a world where relaxed comfort and wild nature coexist.
Location & Accessibility
Samatian Island Lodge is located exclusively on the private Samatia Island in Lake Baringo, an internationally recognized Ramsar wetland site in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley. Because of its island setting, all journeys, whether arriving by land or air, conclude with a scenic boat transfer from the mainland.
By Road
✓ The Boat Transfer: Upon arrival at the mainland, guests are met by the lodge’s boat captain for a breezy, 20-minute boat ride across the bronze waters of the lake to the private island
✓ Scenery: The journey is spectacularly scenic. You will descend the dramatic Great Rift Valley escarpment, pass by agricultural highlands, and eventually transition into the rugged, semi-arid landscapes of the Northern Frontier District
✓ Route: The drive from Nairobi takes approximately 4 to 5 hours. The route follows the well-paved highway through the Rift Valley to Nakuru town, then branches off via Marigat town, heading straight to the western shores of Lake Baringo
✓ Arrival Logistics & Parking: Guests drive directly to a designated, secure mainland parking area (a nominal daily parking fee applies). It is highly recommended to arrive at the parking area before 4:00 PM to avoid the heavy afternoon winds and squalls that can cause rough waves on the lake
By Air
✓ Airstrips: The closest aviation facility is the Lake Baringo Airstrip (Kampi Ya Samaki Airstrip – IATA: LBN), conveniently located on the western mainland shores of the lake
✓ Transfer to Island: Upon touching down at the Lake Baringo Airstrip, guests enjoy a very short vehicle transfer to the lakeshore to meet the boat for the final 20-minute water crossing to Samatian Island
✓ Helicopter Access: For a truly seamless and visually stunning arrival, direct helicopter transfers from Nairobi (or other luxury safari camps in Laikipia/Samburu) can be arranged, flying directly over the dramatic escarpment
✓ Charter & Scheduled Flights: Guests can easily arrange private charter flights from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to the Lake Baringo Airstrip. The flight takes roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour. Depending on the season, limited scheduled flights may also service this route
