2-Day Safari to Lake Nakuru, Elementaita, and Naivasha from Nairobi offers a short wildlife holiday to the Great Rift Valley lakes to enjoy the beautiful scenery, birds as well as wildlife. The Safari begins with a visit to Lake Nakuru National Park located only a 2.5-hour drive from Nairobi.
Arriving at Lake Nakuru we take an afternoon game drive in the compact wildlife area. Lake Nakuru National Park surrounds the lake and was first gazetted to protect the rich bird life, later becoming a sanctuary for endangered species such as the rhino. There are about 25 white and black rhinos, one of the largest concentrations in the country.
Predators are also residents of this park while Rothschild’s giraffes have been translocated into the park for safety. This game park has retained its reputation as an ornithologist’s delight, with more than 400 species of bird found here. Bird species include the Great White Pelican, African Spoonbill, Yellow-billed Stork, Lesser, and Greater Flamingo, and Long-crested Eagle.
The small park (180 sq km) is also home to warthogs, waterbuck, buffaloes, reedbucks, and the occasional leopard. Our next destination is Lake Elementaita home to about 10000 mammals that include the Rothschild giraffe, herons, leopards, bush pigs, jackals, Elands, gazelles, zebras, and others.
Lake Elementaita is home to over 400 bird species including the famous flamingos and for that reason, it’s a protected area to help conserve the birdlife on the lake plus the lake is listed as a UNESCO heritage site so it needs to be protected; Lake Elementaita is also a Ramsar site.
At the southern end of the Lake lies the “Kekopey” hot springs, which the Tilapia grahami breed. The springs are very popular for bathing. The local Masai claims that it can cure many diseases. The reed beds nearby are fishing grounds for night herons and pelicans. Tonight we stay in en-suite rooms at a comfortable lodge at Sun Bird Lodge or at Lake Elementaita Pelican Lodge or similar.
On day two we enjoy an early morning walk along Lake Elementaita with great chances of seeing lots of water birds. Visit the hot springs and return to the camp for breakfast. After breakfast depart for Lake Naivasha – known as a world-class birding destination. The waters of the Lake draw a great range of game to these shores. We enjoy a boat ride on the lake with chances of seeing Hippos and lots of birds.
We also visit Crescent Island Game Sanctuary home to a profusion of plains game and bird life. Walking is permitted. After lunch at one of the lodges/ hotels located by Lake Naivasha, we depart for Nairobi arriving at 1800 Hours.
