3 Days Mikumi National Park Southern Tanzania Safari Tour
See Africa’s famous wildlife and incredible scenery on this 3-day tour to Mikumi National Park, one of Tanzania’s less-crowded Game Park located in the Southern Safari Circuit, a 4-hour drive from Dar es Salaam.
Mikumi National Park abuts the northern border of Africa’s biggest National Park – the Nyerere – and is transected by the surfaced road between Dar es Salaam and Iringa.
Departing from Dar es Salaam, we drive west then south-west to reach Mikumi National Park in the Morogoro Region. In the afternoon, we explore the landscape and wildlife of Mikumi which is often compared to that of the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. Mikumi covers about 3 230 km² (1 247 mi²) of wilderness.
Elephant, Buffalo, Zebra, and Wildebeest are commonly sighted, along with various antelope species such as Impala, Kudu, Hartebeest, and Eland. Other animals to keep an eye out for in Mikumi are Lion, Giraffe, Hippo, Hyena, Wild dogs, Warthogs, Baboons, and more.
Over 300 species of birds have also been recorded in Mikumi Park, including Eurasian migrants such as red-billed oxpecker, marabou stork, and lilac-breasted roller, which stays between October and April.
At the end of an action-packed day of game viewing, we proceed to our comfortable lodge/ camp inside or outside of Mikumi for a relaxing evening. Accommodation options include Stanley’s Kopje camp, Vuma Hills Tented camp, Mikumi Wildlife Camp, Genesis Motel Mikumi, Vamos Hotel, Afrika Yangu Camp and Lodge, Tan-Swiss Lodge.
On day two we get up bright and early for a full day of game viewing in Mikumi National Park. The protected area consists largely of seasonal floodplains covered with grasslands that are similar to the savannahs of the Serengeti, dotted with thorn trees and baobabs.
The park also features Miombo woodlands on its low hills, as well as swamp and riverine forest areas. On our safari in Mikumi, we are likely to see Elephants, Buffalo, Wildebeest, Zebra, Warthog, and an assortment of Antelopes roaming around.
Predators found here include Wild Dogs, Lions, Jackals, Hyenas, and even Leopards. We may also see Giraffes, Hippos, Baboons, Roan Antelope, Sable Antelope, and Vervet Monkeys. Mikumi is also one of Tanzania’s important birding areas, with over 400 species recorded here.
Species include Boehm’s bee-eater, lilac-breasted roller, yellow-throated longclaw, Dickinson’s kestrel, straw-tailed whydah, Bateleur eagle, superb starling, and African fish eagle. We overnight at a camp/ lodge in Mikumi National Park.
On day three of our Southern Tanzania Safari to Mikumi, we enjoy a morning game drive. Then depart for Dar es Salaam making our way back to where our memorable adventure began.

Udzungwa National Park: Mikumi is also a great base for exploring the road-free Udzungwa National Park an hour away – in fact, the only real option since there is no accommodation in the park.
Here you’ll find some extremely rare birds, several endemic species of monkey (including the sanje-crested mangebey and the red hehe colobus) and some wonderfully adventurous rainforest hikes to waterfalls and panoramic 2,000m viewpoints
Mikumi Bush Breakfasts, Sundowners and Picnic Lunches in the bush. What better way to watch the sun go down than with a cool drink, overlooking the grunting hippos in a waterhole.
