Serengeti National Park

Two of Tanzania’s landmark destinations feature on this short 3-day Tanzania road safari; Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater. First, we explore the Serengeti National Park, home to the annual Great Migration, the world’s largest animal migration!

Then from the game-rich plains of the vast Serengeti, we make our way to Ngorongoro Crater that offers Africa’s most reliable Big 5 sightings.

Beginning and ending in Arusha Tanzania, the trip takes us to Serengeti National Park via the village of Mto Wa Mbu and Karatu town. We travel into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, making our way to the higher-lying ground. Along the way, we stop to admire the views over the Rift Valley below.

Heading further along the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater we drive down the outer slopes towards the open plains of the Serengeti. We have a picnic lunch at Naabi Hill and continue into the central area of Serengeti Park, known as the Seronera section, where the game viewing adventure continues.

Here you will see a rich variety of wildlife roaming the African savannahs that stretch out as far as the eye can see. The Park offers spectacular game viewing year-round, being home to healthy populations of Africa’s Big Five – Rhino, Lion, Buffalo, Elephant, and Leopard as well as huge numbers of various antelope species such as Eland, Topi, Kudu, Impala, Oribi, Waterbuck, and Gazelle.

Cheetah, Hippo, Giraffe, Serval Cat, Crocodile, Hyena, and a rich array of other wildlife including numerous Monkey, Mongoose, and Rodent species also inhabit the Serengeti, along with over 500 bird species!

Our overnight camp/ lodge is located in the central part of the Serengeti National Park, deep in the bush. Accommodation options include Seronera Wildlife Lodge, Nomad Lamai Serengeti, Serengeti Pioneer Camp, Sanctuary Kichakani Camp, Four Seasons Safari Lodge, and Sayari Mara Camp.

On day two, we begin with a game drive through Serengeti on our way out of the national park, stopping for lunch as we go. Depending upon the time of the year, you have the chance to witness the great migration as a hundred thousand wildebeests and zebras stampede across the plains.

Keep your eyes open for wildlife, especially in the early morning hours when animals and birds are more active. Next, we visit the Ngorongoro Crater, home to one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa.

We spend our second night at a lodge/ camp near the crater. Accommodation options include Neptune Ngorongoro Luxury Lodge, Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge, andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, and Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp.

On day 3, we descend the steep crater walls to explore this diverse wilderness area teeming with Africa’s wildlife. The Ngorongoro Crater hosts the Big Five of Africa, boasting one of the highest concentrations of Lions in the world.

Almost all of the wild animal species found on the savannahs of East Africa inhabit this compact crater. Ngorongoro offers first-class game viewing and is considered one of the best places to capture the endangered Black Rhino on film.

The crater wildlife safari experience is followed by lunch and later we leave the crater for our return trip to Arusha where this 3-day Tanzania road Safari begun.

Day 1: Arusha/ Moshi – Drive to the Serengeti National Park

0700 Hours: Depart Arusha/ Moshi town after breakfast and drive to the Serengeti National park.  The distance is 325 km and the drive takes around 8 hours. En-route, we stop at Olduvai Gorge, the “cradle of mankind,” where the Leakey family uncovered the fossil of Homo habilis, who lived 1.75 million years ago.

1300 Hours: We arrive at the Nabi Gate the entrance to Serengeti National Park where we have our lunch boxes.

1400 Hours: We proceed on a game drive en route to our accommodations. Serengeti National Park is undoubtedly the best-known wildlife sanctuary in the world, unequaled for its natural beauty and scientific value.

With more than two million wildebeest, half a million Thomson’s gazelle, and a quarter of a million zebra, it has the greatest concentration of plains game in Africa. The Wildebeest and Zebra moreover form the star cast of a unique spectacular – the annual Serengeti migration.

Aside from the wildebeest migration, you will see a huge population of large mammals, including Giraffes, Baboons, Elephants, Hippos, and, of course, Lions. You’ll also come across more than 500 species of birds, most notably, ostriches.
