This 3-day short Wildlife Safari explores one of Tanzania’s top game parks on the well-loved Northern Safari Circuit – Serengeti National Park! Beginning and ending in Arusha, this safari travels to Tanzania’s ultimate safari destination – the Serengeti National Park.
The Serengeti stretches 14,763 square km (5,700 square miles) stretching North to Kenya and bordering Lake Victoria to the West. Established in 1951, it gets its name from the Masaai word Siringet meaning ‘Endless Plain’.
The distance from Arusha is 325 km and the drive takes around eight hours. En route, we stop at Olduvai Gorge, the “cradle of mankind,” where the Leakey family uncovered the fossil of Homo habilis, who lived 1.75 million years ago. Our next stop is at Nabi Gate, the entrance to Serengeti National Park where we have our lunch boxes.
As we travel the southern Serengeti Plains open up before us, en-route to our next camp in the Serengeti. This scenic journey reveals the vast rolling plains of Serengeti dotted by rocky hills called “Kopjes” (inselbergs). The Serengeti aptly derives its name from “Siringitu”, the Maasai word for endless plain.
The plains of the southern Serengeti truly appear to stretch on infinitely, providing prime hunting territory for Africa’s big cats, especially cheetahs. Late afternoon, we arrive at our camp/ lodge in Serengeti Park. Serengeti optional accommodation includes Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge, Mbalageti Serengeti Lodge, Meliá Serengeti Lodge or Seronera Wildlife Lodge.
The whole of day two is spent game viewing on the game-rich plains of Serengeti National Park, Tanzania’s premier safari destination. We explore top areas for sighting wildlife, visiting the best viewpoints to get fantastic photos, and enjoying the scenic landscapes, teeming with animals.
Serengeti animals include the Big Five (Lions, Leopards, Rhinos, Cape Buffalo, and Elephant), Wildebeest, Thomson’s Gazelle, Zebra, Giraffe, Eland, Topi, Kongoni, Impala, and other Antelope. It is also home to Cheetah, Wild Dogs, Jackals, Foxes, and Hyenas.
The over a million wildebeest that form the main show in the breathtaking annual Great Migration is usually preceded by over a million Zebra, and followed by almost half a million Gazelles. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Night two is spent at the same camp/ lodge in the Serengeti again.
Serengeti activities include bird watching, guided nature walks, wildebeest migration experience, and hot air balloon safaris (extra cost).
On the last morning of day 3, we enjoy breakfast at our lodge/ camp before departing by road to Arusha/ Moshi and enjoy packed lunch along the way. Keep a lookout for wildebeest, zebra, and the occasional lion, cheetah, or leopard roaming in the plains.
Our magical 3 day Serengeti road Safari comes to a close in the evening upon our arrival in Arusha.
Serengeti National Park Highlights | What to Do and See
Serengeti Visitor Center: The Serengeti Visitor Centre is worth a stop for its self-guided walking path that provides informative signs and exhibits about the history of the Serengeti, its ecosystem, and its wildlife.
The Serengeti’s Great Migration: Throughout the year huge herds of Wildebeest and Zebra move in a clockwise direction around the vast plains, searching for fresh grazing grounds.
Witnessing the migration in the Serengeti is really as good as it gets in terms of your Tanzania Safari.
Serengeti daytime game drives: The main attraction here is the wildlife. Serengeti National Park houses a huge population of large mammals, including Giraffes, Baboons, Elephants, Hippos, and, of course, Lions.
You’ll also come across more than 500 species of birds, most notably, ostriches.
When you tire of gazing at grazers, head to Moru Kopjes to mingle with rhinos or to the Retina Hippo Pool to watch these massive mammals splash about.
Serengeti Balloon Safaris: There are no words that can do the experience of floating over the Serengeti justice.” Get a birds-eye view of the park as you ride alongside the sun.
The flight lasts about an hour, after which passengers gather around a table, surrounded by the park’s lush plains, for an “Out of Africa” English-style breakfast.
