Hadza bushmen and the Datoga homesteads of Lake Eyasi

This is a short and sweet 3-Day Tanzania Cultural Safari that takes you right off the beaten track into the remote Yaeda Valley, located to the southwest of the Ngorongoro Crater to explore the rare and diverse cultures of the Hadzabe Bushmen & Datoga Tribes.

The trip offers a unique chance to learn and witness first-hand how the Hadza live off the land. Their bush skills are something that has been long forgotten across much of Africa, and time spent with the Hadza offers a very raw and authentic cultural experience – something you will never forget.

Day one begins with a transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport to your Arusha City hotel. Arusha town is located at the foot of Mount Meru, the 5th highest mountain in Africa. Arriving at the comfortable lodge there is time for you to settle in and relax for the rest of the afternoon.

Explore the lush gardens and take a swim in the pool or transfer to bustling Arusha city to experience some African culture and browse the markets.

On the morning of day two, we depart Arusha and travel to Lake Eyasi located in the immediate southwest of Ngorongoro Crater in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania. The Eyasi Valley and nearby hills are the native homeland of the Hadzabe (Hadza), one of the last hunter-gatherer tribes in Africa with approximately 1,300 tribe members.

Spend the afternoon, visiting with the Datoga tribe. These pastoralists are also skilled blacksmiths. They collect metal scrap, which they cleverly process into bracelets, arrowheads, and knives. You also have the opportunity to visit one of the huts in the village. Here you can watch women as they grind corn  to make flour, which they use later to bake bread.

In the evening, you will learn more about tomorrow from your guide, gaining an understanding of the Hadzabe people, their traditions and skills, and also the wider area. Like other hunters and collectors, the San tribe of the Kalahari in southern Africa, the Hadza speak a click language.

You will spend the night at a camp/ lodge in the region of Lake Eyasi. Accommodation options in Lake Eyasi include Lake Eyasi Tented Camp, Kisima Ngeda Tented Camp, and Tindiga Tented Camp.

On the morning of day three, you will be accompanied by an expert guide who has a long-standing relationship with the group and after a welcome and an insight into the village life, we have time to go hunting with Hadzabe.

Hunt for about an hour or 2, walking, running, crawling through bushes, and looking in the shrubs for birds, antelopes, birds, mongoose, and larger herbivores. The men run through the bush and if they find an animal to hunt, they will do so (and subsequently prepare and cook it on fire).

They do not hold back from doing this, even when tourists accompany them, as it is their way of life. The women gather fruits, berries, tubers, and greens.

The local guide who is a member of the tribe teaches you more about how they hunt, track wildlife, make fire, and even take honey from bee’s nests before introducing you to his people and explaining a little more about the customs and the way of life.

In the early afternoon, you will depart for Arusha/ Moshi. On the way back you can enjoy the impressions of your safari and the unique visit to the Hadzabe Bushmen and Datoga.
