Nyerere National Park covers a total area of 54,600 km2. Some of the animals of the savanna (for example elephants, hippopotami, African Wild Dog, cape buffalo and crocodiles) can be found in this park in larger numbers than in any other African game reserve or national park.

Standing high on the banks of the slow, brown Rufiji River, with glorious views down to the plunging torrents of Stiegler’s Gorge, the Serena Mivumo River Lodge offers just twelve luxurious rooms each of which is housed in a timbered chalet with private viewing deck and plunge pool.

Serena Mivumo River Lodge is in the Nyerere National Park, which is 45 minute’s flight from Dar es Salaam International Airport. A meet and greet service is offered from Stiegler’s Airstrip, which is just a half-hour’s game drive away from the lodge.

Day 1: Dar es Salaam – Fly to Serena Mivumo River Lodge

Fly from Dar es Salaam to Nyerere National Park, landing at Stieglers Airstrip where your guide will welcome you and drive you to the Mivumo River Lodge. Enjoy the privacy of your own river-view deck, and in the evening, we would suggest a Rufiji River cruise.

Motor upstream toward Stieglers Gorge and then slowly float back down the river in our custom-built boats. Comfortable and with a cool box full of chilled drinks of your choice, an evening on the river is an exceptional sundowner.

Day 2: Serena Mivumo River Lodge

To make the most of all that Nyerere National Park has to offer, we do recommend a full-day game drive. Leaving after breakfast, you can expect to drive through a variety of ecosystems and are likely to see elephant, buffalo, giraffe, lion, and wild dog, to name but a few.

A picnic lunch is set up under the shade of a tree with camp table and chairs. Perhaps stop at the small but significant gravestone of Frederick Courteney Selous, before returning to Mivumo in time to enjoy pre-dinner drinks around the fire.

Day 3: Serena Mivumo River Lodge

Perhaps enjoy a lazy start this morning and indulge in a private bush breakfast—a remarkable Out of Africa dining experience. After breakfast, you could head off to explore the Maji Moto hot springs. Surrounded by lush vegetation, these picturesque pools are just cool enough to swim in.

Return to Mivumo and the privacy of your own private plunge pool or enjoy a cocktail and a swim in the infinity swimming pool. Dinner and overnight at Mivumo River Lodge.

Day 4: Serena Mivumo River Lodge

After breakfast, head off on a morning game drive, or perhaps you would prefer a bush walk for a different game-viewing experience. Accompanied by an armed ranger, the bush walks offer a fascinating insight into the world of birds, flora, fauna, and a chance to learn about the tracks and signs of Africa’s wildlife.

In the evening, we would suggest a tranquil sundowner on a lantern-lit sandbank, returning to Mivumo River Lodge for a romantic dinner set up on your own river-view deck.
