Giraffe Centre Karen Blixen Kazuri Bead Tour

Our tour of the Giraffe Centre, Karen Blixen Museum, and Kazuri Beads Factory is a popular full-day excursion in Nairobi’s Karen suburb, combining wildlife conservation, colonial history, and local craftsmanship.

These three attractions are located within 5 kilometers of each other, making them easy to visit together in approximately 4 to 6 hours.

Our Nairobi day tour begins with a pickup from your hotel/residence to the Karen Blixen Museum, located on Karen Road in the outskirts of Nairobi. The museum’s history dates back to 1914, during the First World War, with the arrival of Karen Blixen from Denmark.

The visit to the museum takes at most an hour. Karen Blixen Museum is exactly 5 km (just over 3 miles) from the Giraffe Centre.

The Giraffe Center is a wonderful and refreshing experience undertaken during the African Spice Safaris city excursion. The tour offers a completely up-close, personal experience where guests can view and feed giraffes.

There is an impressive variety of bird species that can be viewed throughout the year. The Giraffe Centre visit lasts about an hour. The next stop is the Kazuri Bead Center – a self-help women’s project that produces handmade ceramics and jewelry.

A visit to the workshop and craft centre will take about an hour, during which you will see various processes. A knowledgeable guide shows you around the factory. You will see the entire bead-making process, from molding raw clay to glazing, decorating, and threading beads into finished products. The salesroom is attractively laid out and a beautiful place to visit.

Kazuri means “small and beautiful” in Swahili, and this describes every beautifully handmade ceramic bead, shaped by hand by the women who work at the Kazuri workshop. The beads are kiln-fired once, glazed, and then fired again before being strung.

Lunch will be served at the Utamaduni “veranda” Restaurant.  The menu includes Nairobi’s best Zanzibar soup, salads, sandwiches, steaks, and fresh coastal seafood selections, followed by dessert: Lemon Lime Cheesecake.

The Giraffe Centre, Karen Blixen, and Kazuri Bead Tour enable you to visit 3 great locations in one tour. All located on the outskirts of Nairobi in the Karen District, these sites are part of a tour that takes about 4 hours.

Our Nairobi day tour begins with a pickup from your hotel/residence to the Karen Blixen Museum, located on Karen Road in the outskirts of Nairobi. The museum’s history dates back to 1914, during the First World War, with the arrival of Karen Blixen from Denmark.

At the foot of the Ngong Hills, Karen Blixen established herself as a farmer. After her departure in 1931, the suburbs retained Karen’s commemorative home.

The house was used during the filming of the famous movie that immortalized Karen Blixen’s book by the same name (‘Out of Africa’). The Museum has beautifully landscaped gardens and an all-encompassing view of the Ngong Hills.

The visit to the museum takes at most an hour. Karen Blixen Museum is exactly 5 km (just over 3 miles) from the Giraffe Centre.
