Island Camp Baringo

Island Camp Baringo is a luxury tented safari camp located on the southern tip of Ol Kokwe Island in the freshwater Lake Baringo, in the Great Rift Valley with steep mountainsides on each side.  The camp is approximately 208 km North of Nairobi. Access to Island Camp Baringo is only by boat. Main road access to Baringo is directly from Nakuru and the nearest town to the lake is Kampi ya Samaki. The camp is a 20-minute boat ride (included in rates) from the lakeshore at Kampi ya Samaki, the only settlement of any size on Lake Baringo.

Island Camp Baringo location: Lake Baringo is 20 km north of Marigat and 30 km north of Nakuru. Lake Baringo is a peaceful and beautiful freshwater lake covering about 168 sq km at an altitude of 1000m. It is a shallow lake (maximum depth is 12m) and, like Lake Naivasha, appears to have no outlet. The lake features small wooded creeks, little islands, and white pebble beaches and is framed by mountains to the east and west. The Njemps fishermen can be seen on the lake, to which the Laikipia Escarpment creates a magnificent backdrop. The lake contains large schools of hippos and crocodiles. There are several islands, Ol Kokwe being the largest. The lake’s greatest attraction is the variety of birds of which there are said to be 450 species. Mammals include Grant’s gazelle, waterbuck, mongoose, and dik dik.

Accommodation  23 tents, all en-suite. The camp has 10 Lakeview Rooms (5 Superior Rooms with private splash pools on large verandahs; 2 Deluxe Rooms; Family Cottage with a full kitchen and splash pool. Dining and bars: Central dining room overlooking the lake with international buffet selections. Rock bar, also with excellent views, immediately adjacent

Child-friendly: The camp welcomes children. What to see and do: The club offers bird walks with resident ornithologists, boat rides, island tours, guided walks, waterskiing, windsurfing, and champagne bush breakfasts. Swimming pool next to Pool Bar with east and west views of the lake and the Great Rift Valley. A perfect place to relax by the pool with an adjacent bar and views of the lake. Conference facilities available.

Island camp baringo

Island Camp Baringo has 16 lake view rooms (4 spacious superior rooms with private splash pools, 7 deluxe rooms, and 5 classic tents). Each guestroom has a mosquito net, work desk, and veranda with a sitting area overlooking the lake. The bathrooms are en-suite with showers and flush toilets.

The camp has a dining room overlooking the lake where guests enjoy local and international cuisines. Guest may enjoy their meals in the outdoors by the poolside. There is a main bar and a large pool bar.

The pool bar is popular for afternoon gatherings and many table games are available.  There is also a high rock formation with a 360-degree view of the lake that is popular for “Sundowner drinks.”

The outdoor swimming pool is flanked with sun loungers on the terrace. The camp also features a spa where guests enjoy relaxing massage or manicure/pedicure with a lakefront view of Gibraltar.

There is a lake pontoon for those who wish to water ski or lounge while watching the water sports events. Island Camp Lake Baringo has conference facilities that can accommodate up to 40 guests.

The well-manicured lawn offers perfect venues for weddings, team building, and other corporate and social events. Sundowners on Gibraltar Rock, Special functions, such as conferences/seminars, weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, etc.

Activities include boat trips around the lake, Island excursions to visit local Njemps village and see the hot springs, Kayaking, Trips to Ruko Conservancy to walk with giraffes and other wildlife.

Trips to nearby Lake Bogoria Game Reserve can be arranged, where you may see large numbers of flamingos, sometimes nesting; hot springs, and the elusive and elegant Greater Kudu.
