Mt Longonot Hiking Day Trip Safari is an action-packed day safari to Mt Longonot National Park located 90km from Nairobi city in the Great Rift Valley. The Park is a popular park for hiking and mountain climbing that takes less than 3-4 hours to climb up and down. This Full-Day Longonot Hiking Day Trip Tour starts in Nairobi where you are picked from your hotel/residence at 0600 hours in the morning and make your way by road to Mt Longonot National Park, heading through the Kikuyu lush green highlands.
You will make a scheduled stop at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint. The Rift Valley system was formed 5 million years ago and runs from the Red Sea through Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania. The Rift Valley is an active volcanic area – you can see the volcanic Mt Suswa and Mt Longonot from this viewpoint. Then, arrive at the Mt Longonot National Park for your hike up to the crater. The hike requires medium physical fitness and you will climb through the gulleys that dot the sides of this mountain.
You can make some rest stops at the designated places on the trek. You will get to the rim of the crater and look into the awesome crater below. If you have the strength for it, you can go around the rim of the crater. Descend from Mt Longonot to the base at the Park headquarters. An optional add-on activity includes a visit to the nearby Lake Naivasha where you can have lunch by the lakeside at one of the hotels in Naivasha.
Go on an hour-long boat ride during which you will see many birds, including the diving African fish eagle. Lake Naivasha is famous for its strong populations of hippos and flamingos. There are over 1,500 hippos in the area, and you are almost guaranteed to see one. The lake is a birder’s paradise as it is home to over 400 bird species. You will also see hippos as they swim in the water while opening their mouths to over 180 degrees. Back in the city, you can choose to be dropped off at one of Nairobi’s excellent restaurants or your hotel or residence in the early evening, bringing your action-packed Nairobi hiking day safari to a close.
Mount Longonot Hiking Day Trip Safari is a one-day tour to Mt Longonot National Park. As you drive from Nairobi along the upper escarpment road to Naivasha, the breathtaking view of Mt Longonot beckons you to the left, barely 60 km out of Nairobi.
Mt Longonot is a dormant volcano estimated to have last erupted in the mid-1800s and stands at an estimated 750 meters above the floor of the Great Rift Valley. The mountain is 2776 meters above sea level and dominates the surrounding landscape, with lava canyons on its steep slopes, and a circular caldera over a kilometer in diameter.
A number of viewpoints on the highway have become popular stopovers for motorists drawn by the splendor of this magnificent view. The whole mountain is a National Park under the jurisdiction of Kenya Wildlife Services. It is home to several wild animals including buffalos, antelopes, and leopards, most of which live in the thick forest covering the crater floor. Spotting them is not guaranteed.
The hike on this mountain takes about 2 hours from the Park Gate to the rim of the crater and back, while for those going around the crater as well, the hike takes about 4 hours for the round trip. The path up the slope is pretty steep and slippery at some points, so you need to be reasonably fit to do this hike. The views from the crater rim however make every painful step worth the effort.
The main attraction is the extinct volcano and crater forest, Scenic Landscape, Views of lake Naivasha and the Great Rift Valley. The park is a paradise for birds of prey. Other activities at Mount Longonot include hiking, rock climbing, biking, walking, and viewing Lake Naivasha.
