Ngorongoro Hot Air Balloon Safari Flight is a balloon safari in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area which is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is located in the Arusha region of northern Tanzania, southeast of Serengeti National Park. Occupying some 3,200 square miles (8,300 km2), Ngorongoro Conservation Area contains a variety of habitats and landscapes, including grassland plains, savanna woodlands, forests, mountains, volcanic craters, lakes, rivers, and swampland. Some of the features within the Ngorongoro Conservation area include Ngorongoro Crater and the Olduvai Gorge.

Ngorongoro Hot Air Balloon Flight normally begins at Olduvai Gorge and heads towards the western side of the Ndutu plains offering a unique trip through the cradle of mankind to the plains where the world-famous wildebeest migration begins. Wildlife seen includes gnu (wildebeests), hartebeest, plains zebras, Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelles, lions, hyenas, jackals, leopards, cheetahs, black rhinoceros, and African hunting dogs. The area has more than 400 species of birds including flamingos, silvery-cheeked hornbills, superb starlings, and bronze and tacazze sunbirds.

The basket varies in size as there are large ones that can accommodate up to 16 people while the smaller ones can carry 4-8 people. Depending on the conditions, the balloon flight takes about an hour. After landing, you can enjoy an ‘Out of Africa’ breakfast with champagne in the savannah.

Ngorongoro Hot Air Balloon Safari Flight is offered in the Ngorongoro Conservation area which is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A balloon safari in the Ngorongoro area offers a unique balloon flight over the cradle of mankind to the plains where the world-famous wildebeest migration begins.

The Ngorongoro balloon flight begins near Oldupai Gorge which in Masai translates to the wild sisal. It is this area where one of the oldest hominid species dating back 3 million years has been found.

Our flight also is close to the dark shifting sand dunes of the Ngorongoro, which stand out from the rest of the landscape and are composed of magnetized volcanic ash which local Masai believe came from the sacred mountain of Ol Donyo Lengai, the mountain of God.

The Ngorongoro conservation area is a standing example of wildlife and human habitat that can co-exist side by side, and our flights will go over manyatta homesteads of the semi-Nomadic Maasai tribe.

Our flight path typically flies westwards towards the Ntutu plains, which from December to April is the calving area of millions of wildebeest before they begin their journey northwards through the Serengeti and into the Masai Mara.

A truly magical balloon flight where one encounters the full wildlife and cultural experience. The pick time from your camp within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is between 0400 hours to 0500 hours depending on the distance of the lodge to the lounge site.

Ngorongoro balloon safari picks up guests from over 30 camps within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and beyond. Some of these include Northern Ngorongoro camps like Lemuta Hill, Nasera Rock, and Lake Natron Tented Camp.

Southern Ngorongoro Camps include Serena Lodge, Crater Lodge, Rhino Camp, Wildlife Lodge, and Ngorongoro Wild Camp.
