Sangare Conservancy | Mweiga, Nyeri County | Between Aberdare Mountain Range & Mount Kenya | 3 hours (150-166 km) north of Nairobi | (45-50 km) ~ 1 hour Drive from Nanyuki and 27-30 km from Nyeri town

Sangare Conservancy is a 4,250-acre private conservation area located in Kenya’s Nyeri County. Nestled between the foothills of Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Mountain Range, Sangare features three dramatic river valleys, a large central dam, and a diversity of habitats, including open plains, riverine forest, and bushland, creating a unique and breathtaking wilderness backdrop.

The conservancy serves as a vital wildlife refuge and water catchment area in the region. It features a high-standard electric fence that secures the boundary to protect the animals, except along the steep, naturally protected Honu River valley, and is patrolled daily. Sangare is home to a vast diversity of flora and fauna, including over 40 animal species, such as leopards, buffalo, lions, and a few resident elephants.

The conservancy is also known for protecting rare species such as wild dogs and the Mountain Bongo, as well as over 300 bird species and 63 recorded indigenous trees, including the highly prized sandalwood. With highly exclusive, low-impact accommodation options like the Sangare Campsite, Amboni Riverine Forest Camp, Utulivu House, and Asili House, the conservancy ensures an intimate, crowd-free safari experience.

Visitors can enjoy guided game drives in 4WD vehicles, guided walking safaris, horseback riding, picnics by the dam, and trout or catfish fishing in the Amboni River. Sangare is more than just a wildlife sanctuary; it is a privately managed initiative dedicated to preserving this beautiful land and its inhabitants for generations to come.

Livestock are integrated into the conservancy to help manage the land ecologically, with herders providing an extra layer of security and land stewardship. The conservancy operates with a small, dedicated local workforce that maintains the roads, fence lines, pipelines, and the airstrip, ensuring that tourism directly supports the ongoing protection and management of the ecosystem.

History

Sangare Conservancy has been a family-owned sanctuary since 1955, originally established as a private ranch before evolving into a dedicated wildlife conservancy. It was created with the enduring mission to protect the pristine wilderness, indigenous forests, and vital water sources between the Aberdare and Mount Kenya ecosystems.

The conservancy covers 4,250 acres of protected land. To protect wildlife and minimize human-wildlife conflict, a high-standard electric fence was constructed along the accessible perimeter, which is meticulously patrolled every day by the conservancy’s security team. Conservation efforts at Sangare focus heavily on habitat preservation and water management.

The property features two large rivers and a central dam, providing a crucial refuge for wildlife during dry seasons. Additionally, the conservancy actively protects indigenous flora, harboring rare plant species like the Osiris lanceolate (sandalwood) that have been severely depleted in other Kenyan forests.

Tourism infrastructure is carefully managed to maintain a low ecological footprint, featuring the scenic Sangare Campsite and a selection of private luxury eco-homes. A dedicated local workforce ensures the ongoing maintenance of the airstrip, pipelines, and fences, reflecting Sangare’s vision of sustainable, low-impact conservation and harmonious land use.
