This 3-day road safari takes you to the Laikipia region, where you will stay in a private Rhino sanctuary called Solio Game Reserve (Solio Ranch), located 30 km North of Nyeri Town. Solio Game Reserve is a private wildlife sanctuary, tucked in the valley between the lofty slopes of Mount Kenya and the peaks of the Aberdare Mountains.
Beginning and ending in Nairobi, the tour travels by road to Solio Ranch, located about 180 km (4 hours) north of Nairobi along the Nyeri – Nyahururu road.
Solio Ranch plays a major part in preserving and breeding Black Rhinos in Kenya. The reserve is internationally recognized as the most successful private rhino-breeding reserve in Kenya, and visitors will find that sightings of up to 40 rhinoceroses at a time are not uncommon.
The Reserve also offers some of the best leopard viewings in the country. Other animals include the rhino (both black & white), buffalo, zebra, eland, impala, waterbuck, Thompson’s gazelle, and warthog.
Most of the plains species can be seen here, the predators, lion, leopard, cheetah, and hyena, as well as two northern species, the reticulated giraffe and the beisa oryx. The Solio Reserve is also an ideal place for bird-watching.
More than 300 species are found in the game reserve, including European rollers, flycatchers, and birds of prey such as vultures, eagle owls, Montagu’s Harriers, long-crested eagles, and buzzards. Also, crowned cranes and the European stork can be found here every year.
You will spend 2 nights at the luxury Solio Lodge – the only lodge or camp within the historic 45,000-acre Solio Ranch and its enclosed, 19,000-acre Solio Reserve. Day 1: Nairobi – Drive to Solio Game Reserve
0800 Hours: African Spice Safaris representative will provide a safari briefing before you depart for Solio Game Reserve/ Ranch situated 180 km north of Nairobi or 30 km north of Nyeri on the Nyeri – Nyahururu road. The journey takes around 4 hours from Nairobi.
1300 Hours: We arrive in time for lunch, check into our rooms, and later relax before the evening game drive. There is a good chance of encountering black and white rhinos, buffalo, zebras, giraffes, oryx, antelope, Thompson’s gazelles, impalas, waterbucks, and warthogs.
