Meru National Park

This 3-day road safari tour will reveal one of Kenya’s most underrated safari destinations – Meru National Park, one of the areas in which conservationists George and Joy Adamson raised Elsa the Lioness of Born Free fame. The safari begins and ends in Nairobi.

The safari departs by road to Meru National Park, located 350km (215 miles) from Nairobi, east of Meru town. Visitors can see Grevy’s zebras, elephants, Bohor reedbucks, hartebeests, pythons, puff adders, cobras, buffalos, leopard, cheetah, lion, both Grevy’s and plains zebra, hartebeest, hippo, reticulated giraffe, buffalo and more than 427 recorded species of birds.

Spend 2 nights in Meru National Park at a lodge or camp enjoying various activities such as bird watching (over 300 species of birds recorded), day and night game drives, picnics and sundowners, cultural safaris to visit local Borana and Meru people, nature walks or bush walks, rafting and fishing can be organized along Tana River and relaxing at the hotel swimming pools.

Mount Kenya crowns the beautiful scenery of Meru National Park

Meru National Park Game Viewing is excellent and includes four of the “Big Five” – elephants, lions, leopards and buffalo – as well as cheetahs, antelope, hippos and crocodiles.

The roads are well graded and Meru National Park is quieter than most of the other parks.

Bird Watching – over 300 species of birds have been recorded within the park, including the Peter’s Finfoot, which inhabits the Murera and Ura Rivers, the Pel’s Fishing Owl, kingfishers, rollers, bee-eaters, starlings and numerous weavers.

Larger birds include the secretary bird, ostriches and hornbills. Take a spotter’s guide so that you can identify the many species you will see.

Scenic Safari – to enjoy the beautiful scenery and landscape – stroll through or view the dense vegetation, forests and savannahs with long grass, rivers and swamps.

3 Days 2 Nights Meru National Park Road Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi – Drive to Meru National Park (Embu Route)

0700 Hours: After an early breakfast at your hotel in Nairobi, we depart by road to Meru National Park, a road safari that will take you about 5 hours.

You will enjoy the beautiful countryside scenery and excellent views of snow-capped Mount Kenya in a distance. The road meanders through valleys especially after Embu town where you can make several stopovers for sightseeing.

1230 Hours: Enjoy lunch at a restaurant in Meru or Maua town.

1400 Hours: Arrive at Meru National Park Murera gate and proceed for a game-drive.  The park is home to a large pride of lions, herds of buffalo, and hippos and crocodiles that live in the rivers.

Meru National Park is noted for its fauna and natural beauty. It has many swamps and rivers lined with palms, as well as mountains and woodlands, and it is the setting for Joy Adamson’s book “Born Free”, which was later made into a successful film.

1830 Hours: Arrive at your camp/ lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Full Day in Meru National Park

We spend a full day in the Meru National Park on morning and afternoon game drive. Its natural scenery is diverse, from the wide-open plains with many rivers, to the woodlands on the slopes of the Nyambeni mountain range, to the northeast of Mount Kenya.

Game viewing includes elephants, hippos, lions, leopards and cheetahs. There are also some rare antelope, including the Lesser Kudu, duiker and dik-dik, a tiny African antelope that stands just twelve inches high and is notoriously shy.

Meru National Park also has some of Kenya’s largest herds of buffalo, along with hartebeests, giraffes and gazelles.

Over 300 species of birds have been recorded in Meru National Park, including the Peter’s Finfoot, the Pel’s Fishing Owl, kingfishers, rollers, bee-eaters, starlings and numerous weavers.

There is also an abundance of ostriches, hornbills, secretary birds, eagles and other smaller birds.

Day 3: Meru National Park – Drive to Nairobi (Nanyuki – Nairobi Route)

0630 Hours: Depart for an early morning game drive.  Game viewing includes elephants, hippos, lions, leopards and cheetahs.

There are also some rare antelope, including the Lesser Kudu, duiker and dik-dik, a tiny African antelope that stands just twelve inches high and is notoriously shy.

Meru National Park also has some of Kenya’s largest herds of buffalo, along with hartebeests, giraffes and gazelles.

0930 Hours: Return to the lodge/ Camp for breakfast.

1100 Hours: Depart for Nairobi with lunch stopover in Meru town. Enjoy the beautiful countryside scenery en- route to Nairobi.

You will see large wheat and French beans plantations in Timau and excellent views of snow-capped Mount Kenya.

1900 Hours: Arrive in Nairobi and transfer to your residence/ Hotel
