Elewana Elsa's Kopje Meru | Meru National Park | ~ 350 km (6 hour drive) from Nairobi | ~80 km (1.5-hour drive) from Meru Town | ~42 km from Lewa Wildlife Conservancy | ~49 km From Ngare Ndare Forest | 15.4 km (25 min drive) from Mulika Lodge Airstrip

Elewana Elsa’s Kopje is sculpted seamlessly into the rocky outcrops of Mughwango Hill in the heart of Meru National Park. Built just above the site of George Adamson’s original camp, where he raised and released the famous Born Free lioness, Elsa, this environmentally award-winning boutique lodge offers a profound connection to Kenya’s conservation history.

The lodge perfectly balances colonial-style elegance with rugged natural beauty, offering sweeping 360-degree views that stretch from the snow-capped peak of Mount Kenya to the endless eastern plains. As one of only two lodges in an incredibly diverse 870-square-kilometer wilderness, guests enjoy a deeply exclusive, uncrowded, and profoundly luxurious safari experience.

Location & Accessibility

The lodge is situated in the remote northern region of Kenya within Meru National Park, an exceptionally diverse landscape featuring 13 spring-fed rivers, cool forests, and semi-desert plains dotted with giant baobabs.

By Road

✓ The closest major town is Meru, located approximately 80 kilometers away and requiring about a 1.5-hour drive
✓ The final 15-kilometer approach from the park gates serves as a leisurely, wildlife-rich game drive directly to the lodge
✓ Scenic road transfers from Nanyuki or other northern Elewana properties take between 3.5 and 8 hours, depending on the exact route

By Air

✓ Flights from Wilson Airport in Nairobi to these local airstrips take approximately one hour
✓ A dedicated helicopter pad is available just a 1-minute drive from the main lodge reception
Meru Mulika Airstrip serves as an alternative landing point located 40 minutes away by road
Kinna Airstrip is located a 45-minute drive away and receives a daily scheduled Air Kenya flight from Nairobi
Mughwango Airstrip is a private facility located just a 5-minute drive from the lodge for exclusive charter flights

Accommodation

The ten cottages and one private house at Elewana Elsa’s Kopje are built individually around the natural trees and massive rocks of Mughwango Hill. Each structure features a unique layout shaped by the hillside terrain, utilizing natural materials, earthy tones, and bespoke furniture crafted from chunky wooden beams that showcase raw knots and textures.

Cottage Suites

✓ Two specific cottages within this category are designed with additional interior space to seamlessly accommodate an extra single bed for families traveling with children under the age of 16
Cottage 3 is uniquely built with a spacious private indoor sitting room instead of an outdoor deck. This specific cottage is closest to the central dining areas and the swimming pool, making it the most highly recommended room for guests with minor mobility challenges or those navigating the rocky terrain
Cottages 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 are configured as double rooms, while one additional unit is set up as a twin or double cottage. Each of these masterfully styled sanctuaries contains a large master bedroom, a private outdoor deck or veranda for afternoon siestas, and an en-suite bathroom with hot and cold running water supplying the basins, shower, and bath

The Family Cottage

✓ The master bedroom suite is enhanced by a luxurious, romantic outdoor bathtub positioned in a secluded alcove under the open sky
✓ This brand-new, multi-room cottage provides an exceptionally spacious layout designed to deliver sweeping, panoramic views across the expansive Meru National Park plains
✓ A beautiful, open-fronted central living room connects the bedrooms, flowing out onto a massive private outdoor wooden deck where families can gather to watch wildlife pass below the hill
✓ The interior footprint features two large bedrooms consisting of one master double room and one twin room, with both spaces maintaining their own completely private en-suite bathrooms

Honeymoon Suites

✓ The property features three distinct Honeymoon Suites that overlook the vast plains, offering ultimate seclusion and romantic opulence for couples on safari
✓ Two of these upgraded suites are equipped with deep, romantic outdoor bathtubs positioned on the edge of the private verandas to allow starlit bubble baths with infinite wilderness views
✓ This three-level suite also flows out onto an extensive private outdoor deck lined with comfortable day loungers, and two of these suites can fit an extra single bed for children under 16 if required
✓ The original Honeymoon Suite is an expansive, three-tiered cottage that features a multi-level layout separating the main bedroom, the en-suite bathroom, and a spacious private indoor lounge area

The Private House

✓ This exclusive, ultra-luxury safari villa faces directly toward the jagged peaks of Mount Kenya and offers families or small groups a completely private, self-contained retreat
✓ The bedrooms flank a massive, open-fronted shared central dining room and lounge area, exquisitely furnished in a smart colonial style with exposed wood and custom artwork
✓ The accommodation footprint includes one master double en-suite bedroom, complete with a dedicated dressing room, alongside a second spacious en-suite twin bedroom
✓ The front of the house opens into a beautifully manicured private garden that centers around a personal infinity swimming pool reserved exclusively for the occupants of the house

✓ The house comfortably accommodates two extra single beds for children under 16, and bookings automatically include the dedicated services of a private expert guide and an exclusive 4×4 safari vehicle

Dining & Culinary Experience

The food at Elsa’s Kopje is highly rated, featuring fresh, varied ingredients straight from the lodge’s own garden, with flexible dining locations that take full advantage of the landscape.

Main Dining & Lounge Areas

Private dining can be arranged directly on the deck of your cottage upon request
✓ Meals are served at individual tables unless guests specifically request to dine communally
✓ The adjacent lounge area features low-slung wood-and-cushion chairs, Persian rugs, and a stunning polished wood bar

✓ The dining room is set in an open-fronted thatched building with polished stone floors and a natural rock serving table

Culinary Offerings

Standard rates include soft drinks, beers, house wines, and local spirits
Dinner is a formal sit-down meal often served outdoors under the stars with soft lantern lighting
Lunch is served family-style, featuring fresh salads, quiches, light meats, and exquisite homemade desserts
Breakfast can be enjoyed as a hot meal in the dining room or packed as a delicious scenic picnic in the bush

✓ Menus frequently feature a light Italian slant, with excellent vegetarian, vegan, halal, and gluten-free options available

Experiences & Activities

The guiding team at Elsa’s Kopje holds Bronze or Silver certifications from the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association. Because this lodge is one of only two properties operating inside the entire national park, the guides have intimate, exclusive access to the wilderness, allowing them to lead deep, personalized tracking sessions completely free from other tourist vehicles.

Guided 4×4 Game Drives

✓ The vehicles are heavily enhanced for enthusiast photographers, featuring built-in specialized camera equipment stands, protective ponchos, suncream, reference books, binoculars, and individual electronic charging sockets at every seat
✓ Game drives navigate through cool riverine forests, wide semi-desert plains, and past giant baobab trees to find large elephant herds, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hippos, and rare northern species like caracal, aardwolf, and the beautiful Lesser Kudu
✓ Tracking expeditions leave the lodge each morning and afternoon using a new fleet of custom-designed, specially fitted 4×4 Toyota Land Cruisers. These top-tier vehicles are completely open-sided with three rows of elevated seats to guarantee unobstructed 360-degree views for tracking and wildlife photography

Fenced Rhino Sanctuary Expeditions

✓ This dedicated sanctuary protects a thriving, healthy breeding population of over 70 endangered black and white rhinos
✓ Game drives regularly venture into an incorporated, highly secure 84-square-kilometer rhino sanctuary situated within the core of the national park
✓ Because the sanctuary encompasses such a massive physical footprint of wild terrain, finding and tracking the rhinos remains an authentic, exciting game-driving challenge for guides and guests alike

Full-Day Tana River Excursions

✓ Guests can pack a gourmet picnic lunch and dedicate an entire day to exploring the remote sandy banks and dramatic wilderness of the iconic Tana River
✓ The Tana River stands as Kenya’s longest waterway, rising from the high-altitude streams of Mount Kenya and traveling 704 kilometers across the country before emptying into the Indian Ocean

✓ These comprehensive day trips allow travelers to view basking hippos and massive Nile crocodiles along the banks while exploring areas of the ecosystem rarely visited by standard safari itineraries

Guided Nature Walks & Mughwango Hill Climbs

✓ Travelers can step out of the safari vehicles to enjoy a slow, mindful walking safari focused on the intricate details of the bush, accompanied by an expert armed naturalist guide
✓ Walks explore the micro-ecosystems of the plains, teaching guests how to identify subtle animal tracks, observe industrious dung beetles, decipher the medicinal uses of local flora, and locate the underground colonies of the naked mole rat

✓ The experience includes a guided trek up to the very highest peak of Mughwango Hill, rewarding climbers with an unmatched, panoramic 360-degree view that stretches from the snow-capped peak of Mount Kenya in the west to the infinite Meru plains in the east.

Palm-Lined River Fishing

✓ The rivers offer fun, interactive line fishing with a plentiful underwater population of large catfish, tilapia, and barbell
✓ Anglers can take a fishing rod, an afternoon drink, fresh canapés, and a good book down to the tranquil, palm-fringed banks of one of Meru’s thirteen spring-fed rivers
✓ While waiting for a catch, guests can sit back in absolute silence and share the riverbanks with resident monitor lizards, nesting herons, and spectacular, colorful kingfishers

Hillside Infinity Swimming Pool

✓ The pool area is fully supported by dedicated bar service, allowing guests to order chilled beverages, cocktails, or fresh juices without leaving the water
✓ Surrounded by elegant terracotta flagstones, comfortable sunloungers, and wide parasols, the pool deck provides a cool oasis to relax during the intense heat of midday
✓ The lodge features a sparkling main swimming pool perched dramatically onto the steep rocky side of Mughwango Hill, creating the illusion of water dropping off into the infinite plains below

Al Fresco Bush Breakfasts & Sunset Sundowners

Bush breakfasts offer guests the opportunity to enjoy a full, hot cooked meal served al fresco right in the middle of the open savanna plains, surrounded by passing wildlife and early morning birdsong
✓ The picnic breakfast features a wide selection of fresh fruits, yogurts, cereals, juices, hot coffee, and a live cooking station where sausages, bacon, and eggs are prepared piping hot over vehicle-mounted stoves
Sundowners are a deeply ingrained safari tradition where afternoon game drives pause at sunset so guests can step out of the vehicle, absorb the rich orange and pink colors of the sky, and enjoy an expertly mixed gin and tonic paired with freshly prepared canapés

Therapeutic Massages & Open-Fronted Spa

✓ The lodge features a dedicated wellness spa designed with rustic stone walls and a high thatched roof that remains completely open at the front to frame sweeping views of the savanna
In-room treatments can be easily coordinated upon request, allowing guests to enjoy therapeutic massages beside a warming open fire directly inside the private sanctuary of their own cottage

✓ Professional therapists offer a specialized menu of deep-tissue massages, relaxing back treatments, manicures, and pedicures specifically structured to soothe away travel fatigue and stress

Wilderness Weddings & Romantic Honeymoons

✓ Elsa’s Kopje provides a flawless, unashamedly romantic backdrop for destination weddings, private blessings, and formal renewals of vows in the heart of Africa
Honeymoon travelers are treated to deeply romantic touches, including candlelit dinners served on private verandas, room service ordered via in-room two-way radios, and exclusive upgrades to the multi-level Honeymoon Suites
