Gombe Chimpanzee Excursions

Book a day trip to Gombe Stream National Park from Kigoma, Tanzania. Gombe is the smallest of Tanzania’s national parks. The major attraction of the Gombe Stream National Park is the chimpanzees, made famous by Jane Goodall in 1960 when she established the area as a chimpanzee research station.

Despite its tiny size of only 52 sq km, it’s a magnificent, dense tropical forest rising steeply from Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania. It is a park without roads, where you can walk and experience nature with all your senses.

Our Gombe day trip departs from Kigoma town each day at 06:00 am by boat which takes about one hour and a half to Gombe Stream National Park. This chimpanzee day tour which is sometimes known as the weekend break is ideal for travelers with limited time who want to experience the chimpanzee trekking.

The main highlight of the Gombe day trip is chimpanzee trekking but apart from that, there are many other species, including baboon, vervet monkey, red colobus monkey, blue monkey, and bush babies. Gombe also hosts a wide variety of bird species (over 200 species) which range from the iconic fish eagle to the jewel-like Peter’s twinspots that hop tamely around the visitors’ centre.

There are thousands of plant and flower species that may be found in the park. Kakombe, a spectacular waterfall in the park, is a must-see. Spend the day in Gombe with the chimpanzees and return back to Kigoma before sunset.

It is best visited during the dry season (June to October) since the chimps don’t roam as far, providing for better photo opportunities. The wet season is typically from February to June and then again from November to mid-December.

Please note that the minimum age to participate in chimpanzee trekking is 15 years old.

Gombe Stream National Park 1 Day Safari Itinerary

0600 Hours: We pick you up from your hotel in Kigoma for your Gombe day trip. Transfer to Kibirizi port where you will take a boat to Gombe Stream National Park. The journey takes about one hour and a half. Upon arrival at Gombe, you register at the park headquarters and get assigned to a guide who escorts you into the forest for chimpanzee trekking.

Gombe Stream National Park is a thin strip of ancient forest straddling the steep slopes and river valleys that hem in the sandy northern shore of Lake Tanganyika, about 16 kilometers from Kigoma town. This park was made world-famous for the primate studies conducted by pioneering British researcher Jane Goodall.

The majority of wildlife to be found at Gombe Stream is primates. In addition to the famous chimpanzees, you may see olive baboons, these have also been researched since the 1960s and are exceptionally habituated to humans. You may also spot the red-tailed and red colobus monkeys; the latter is regularly hunted by chimps and so they stick to the forest canopy.

Walking in the forest searching for the chimpanzee is very fascinating. From a distance, you will hear the sounds made by chimpanzees communicating with each other. Our Gombe day trip guide will help us track the chimpanzee to their hiding and feeding areas.  As we continue with the tracking of chimps we shall walk up to the hill to Kakombe waterfalls.

1300 Hours: At this point, we enjoy the stunning view of the park and Lake Tanganyika which border the park. We then have our picnic lunch while enjoying the amazing view and scenery of Gombe Stream National Park.

After lunch, we continue to trek searching for different families of chimpanzees and other primates. Our guide helps us to spot different birds and explain to us about different types of fruits eaten by chimps.

1600 Hours: In the afternoon, we depart Gombe by boat to Kigoma and then transfer to the hotel in Kigoma town. This brings our day safari to Gombe to an end.
