2 Days Mombasa Safaris Tsavo East National Park 1 Night

2 Days Mombasa Safaris Tsavo East National Park 1 Night is an excellent-value Big 5 safari experience in Tsavo East National Park of Kenya, starting and ending in Mombasa. Tsavo East National Park is 173 km northwest of Mombasa (approximately 2½ hours’ drive from Mombasa). During your stay, you will have the opportunity to embark on game drives with expert guides in a safari vehicle with a pop-up roof that opens so guests can look out.

The 2-day Tsavo East Safari includes accommodation at any one of the following eco-friendly safari camps or lodges with prime access to Tsavo East National Park wildlife areas. These include Ashnil Aruba Lodge, Doa Safari Club, Galana Crocodile Camp, Impala Safari Lodge, Kiboko Camp, Loyk Tsavo Camp, Manyatta Camp, Osteria Swara Camp, Taita Hills Game Lodge, Satao Camp, Ngutuni Lodge, Voi Safari Lodge, etc, where guests enjoy traditional Kenyan cuisine.

The tour provides convenient pick-up and drop-off services from any address in Mombasa.  Tsavo East is Kenya’s largest game park, incorporating a massive 13700km², whilst Tsavo West National Park is about 9065km² in size. Tsavo East is renowned for its large herds of elephants, often dramatically coated in fine red dust. The population is over 10,000 elephants strong.

Tsavo East is also notorious for its lions – the ‘man-eating’ lions of Tsavo, in particular. The lions of Tsavo became famous when railway crews were attacked and many of the workers were eaten in 1898. Some reports estimate that the two lions killed about 135 people building a railway bridge over the Tsavo River, whilst recent evidence suggests that 34 people were eaten.

Over the centuries of slave trading between East Africa and Arabia, countless slaves died en route to Mombasa – their bodies left behind in the Tsavo area, where lions most likely fed on the corpses. The lions of Tsavo are today known for their short manes, compared to the males of other populations. The hot, dry habitat of Tsavo may be the reason for their shorter manes.

In addition to its famous elephants and lions, Tsavo East is also home to the other members of the Big Five – leopard, buffalo, and rhino. The black rhino population is monitored to protect these endangered mammals from poachers, but they are rarely spotted on game drives. Tsavo East is also home to the endangered hirola antelopes.

Tsavo East National Park also hosts a wide variety of other wild animals, from cheetahs, hyenas, and crocodiles to hippos, giraffes, and Grevy’s zebra, along with species typical of northern Kenya, including Gerenuk and Somali ostrich.

Over 500 bird species have been recorded in Tsavo East, including black kite, crowned crane, hornbill, lovebird, and sacred ibis.

2 Days Mombasa Safaris Tsavo East National Park 1 Night Information

This is a short overnight Kenyan African safari to Tsavo East National Park located only 65 miles on the Nairobi-Mombasa Road (A109) to the Buchuma Gate. The tour is suitable for all ages and group sizes and begins and ends at Mombasa (Kenya Coast).

It departs as a private safari or you can join an existing safari group. Key attractions include the Galana River and the Yatta plateau, as well as several pools and dams used as watering holes by both birds and animals. Tsavo East National Park is one of the best places to see red elephants in Africa.

It’s not just elephants that we’ll see on our game drives, however, as Tsavo East National Park is home to a rich variety of wild animals including the famous Big Five. Keep an eagle eye out for buffalos, rhinos, lions, hyenas, zebras, and all kinds of antelopes like kudu, eland, red hartebeest, and bushbuck. We’re sure to see warthogs and the world’s largest flightless bird – the ostrich.

The tour departs from your hotel/ residence in Mombasa and travels to Tsavo East National Park. Upon arrival, we set off on a 4×4 game drive in Tsavo East. This Kenyan park, jointly with Tsavo West National Park, forms the largest park in Kenya at 13747 sq kilometres. We are fortunate to have a day and a half here in search of more exciting sightings, particularly on the lookout for the famous Tsavo lions.

We take a break from our wildlife adventures for lunch and a rest at our safari lodge, before embarking on a late afternoon game drive. Tsavo East is home to the Cape buffalo, caracal, Tanzanian cheetah, leopard, a diverse abundance of antelope, zebra, black rhino, the ubiquitous elephant, and the famous Tsavo lions.

Not to be outdone there are over 500 species of birds gathered here. A great spot for viewing is the Aruba Dam, whose brown waters attract thirsty wildlife and water birds. End your rewarding day on safari in Tsavo off with optional sundowners and dinner at the safari lodge.

On day two, we rise and shine early this morning for a fresh cup of coffee or tea and rusks before our sunrise game drive. Early mornings are the best time for spotting predators roaming the bush before they settle down for the day. It’s also an excellent time for birdwatching and photography so keep your cameras ready.

Your guide takes you in search of wildlife action using his experience to improve your chances of sighting animals. After our early morning game drive, we return to the camp for a late breakfast at the restaurant. At about noon we have lunch at the lodge, before setting off on an afternoon game drive.

Then we check out and slowly make our way back south through the wilderness watching for mammals, reptiles, insects, and birds as we go. We then exit via the south gate, leaving the magnificent Tsavo East behind and retracing our steps to Mombasa.
