Beginning and ending in Nairobi, this short 3-day road safari visits the scenic Sweetwaters/Ol Pejeta Conservancy – a 90 000-acre (360 km²) non-profit wildlife conservancy located in the foothills of the Aberdare Mountain Range and Mount Kenya.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy is home to the last two northern white rhinos in the world. It is also East Africa’s largest black rhino sanctuary and Kenya’s only place to view chimpanzees (its only chimpanzee sanctuary). The conservancy is also home to the Big Five of Africa (elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo, and leopard).

The Conservancy is a 4-hour drive (217 kilometers) north of Nairobi.  The main gate is 14 kilometers from the equator turn-off, just before Nanyuki town, and it lies on the equator.

The Sweetwaters/ Ol Pejeta Conservancy boasts an astounding variety of animals, including the Big Five (the endangered black and white rhino, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and lion), Grevy’s zebra, Jackson’s hartebeest, cheetah, and chimpanzee.

There are about 300 elephants, 67 lions, 30 cheetahs, 20 leopards, and 60 spotted hyenas, as well as a pack of African wild dogs. Other animals include hippo, giraffe, baboon, monkey, aardvark, and ostrich, as well as antelopes – Grant’s gazelle, Thomson’s gazelle, impala, Beisa oryx, waterbuck, and eland.

Day 1: Nairobi – Drive to Sweetwaters/ Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Sweetwaters Game Sanctuary 2 Days 1 Night Safari departs from Nairobi and proceeds north, driving through lush tea and coffee estates to arrive in time for lunch at your lodge/ camp. Ol Pejeta Conservancy is located 200–270 kilometers (approx. 124–168 miles), usually taking 3.5 to 4.5 hours each way.

After lunch, we relax before setting out on an afternoon game drive in the Conservancy, which is East Africa’s Largest Black Rhino Sanctuary, the only place in Kenya to see chimpanzees, and holds some of the highest predator densities in Kenya.
