Lewa Wildlife Conservancy

This Big Five Kenyan wildlife safari begins and ends in Nairobi and travels by road to one of Kenya’s best private reserves – Lewa Downs Wildlife Conservancy. Enjoy game drive in open 4X4 safari vehicles with professional driver guides and stay at an intimate, scenically located tented camp/ lodge.

Lewa Downs Wildlife Conservancy is approximately 260 km from Nairobi and is located along Isiolo Road, 2 km from Meru/ Isiolo/ Isiolo Nanyuki junction. The drive takes you from Nairobi to Karatina – Kiganjo – Nanyuki – Subuiga from where the gate of Lewa is 2 kilometres down Isiolo Road.

Enjoying an exclusive game viewing experience away from the crowds at Lewa Conservancy. Embark on morning, afternoon and night-time game drives in open-sided 4×4 safari vehicles, sighting a spectacular array of free-roaming wildlife.

There are approximately 22 resident Lions in Lewa, hyenas, leopards, wild Dog, cheetahs, over 300 elephants, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, beisa oryx, gerenuk, grevy’s zebra, and the spectacular aquatic antelope.

Bird life on the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is prolific, from the impressive Ostrich to the Soaring Falcons to the humble sun birds you will see some of the most hidden gems on your safari

The Conservancy offers many activities including game viewing – with the option of day and night drives, bird watching, bush walks with local guides, lion tracking, and Visits to local villages (Boas).

Other activities include Participation in wildlife management activities, Educational talks on the history and day-to-day operations of the conservancy, Massage and Beauty Therapy, Sun-downers, Bush meals, Game watching from blinds, aerial and helicopter rides and visits to the nearby attractions and ranches.

Game viewing from the Blinds: Sit quietly in one of our wildlife blinds and watch elephants, impala, waterbuck, and many others come to drink water in the nearby marsh.

Day trips to the adjoining Ngare Ndare Forest: Look for the elusive Columbus monkey population and to learn about the indigenous flora and its local uses

Lewa Wildlife Bird Watching: For the keen bird watcher, the sight and sound of the close to 350 bird species is an absolute delight. Do bring along your bird book and you will enjoy marking the birds off your list.

Bush Meals Drive, walk or ride to a secluded area in the wild. The mouth-watering local dishes, the roaring bonfire for chilly evenings, and the enchanting Maasai dancers are recipes for a memorable meal.

Bush Walks: viewing wildlife on foot, accompanied by our local armed guides, provides an up-close and personal interaction with the wildlife and flora and fauna available. This experience is one of the areas that make Lewa a truly unique safari destination.

Lewa Wildlife Day Game Drives: The Conservancy is also the best place to spot herds of elephants and buffalo, giraffes, lions, cheetahs, more than 400 species of birds and if lucky, a pack of wild dogs!

4 Day Kenya Road Safari Lewa Downs Wildlife Conservancy Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi – Drive to Lewa Downs Conservancy

Depart Nairobi in the morning and drive northwards to Lewa Downs Conservancy where elephants roam alongside graceful reticulated giraffe, giant eland, all the big cats, and one of the world’s last great population of black rhino.

After lunch at the camp, we enjoy an afternoon game drive. The conservancy is home to the Big Five, both Black Rhino & White Rhino and Sitatunga.

The park is one of Kenya’s last remaining habitats, Grevy Zebra: 25% of the worlds remaining population & Greater Kudu. And for the bird lovers, there are 440 species of birds that have been recorded here.

There are several lodges within the Conservancy.  You also have an opportunity to enjoy a Night game drive tonight.

Day 2 & Day 3: Full Day in Lewa Downs Conservancy

Today we spend our day in Lewa exploring the conservancy on day and night game drives.

Alternatively, we can choose to do the following; go on foot with a professional tracker, jog with a Masai warrior, sitting in a blind with a thermos of hot coffee and a good book, or go on horseback riding.

Other activities include a tour of Lewa’s community weaving and furniture workshops, a tour of the organic garden producing the lodge’s fruits and vegetables.

One can also play tennis, explore the nearby ancient archaeological site, swim in the pool, or simply relax on the terrace with a pair of binoculars spotting the “Big Five” from your lounge chair.

Day 4: Lewa Downs Conservancy – Drive to Nairobi

0630 Hours: Early morning tea/ coffee followed by a morning game drive in Lewa. Return to the camp for breakfast.

Before lunch, you can enjoy the following activities: Game viewing, Bird watching, Bushwalks, Lion tracking, Horse, and Camel trekking.

Other activities include game viewing from the blinds, Visits to the cultural village, Visit the archaeological site, or Fly fishing (weather/ time permitting).

1400 Hours: After lunch return back to Nairobi by road arriving in the evening.
