Samburu National Reserve

This 6-day 4×4 wildlife journey combines excellent game viewing at four of Kenya’s best wildlife areas with diverse cultural activities and plenty to see and do. The tour visits Samburu Game Reserve, Aberdare National Park, Lake Nakuru National Park and the Masai Mara Game Reserve.

Beginning from Nairobi the tour travels north to Samburu National Reserve – a not very well-known, but definitely worth a visit. Samburu National Reserve is situated on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River in Kenya.

We spend time here on game drives where we may come across lions, cheetahs and leopards, and are likely to see elephants, hippos and buffalos.

Grevy’s zebras, oryx, giraffes, gerenuks, other antelopes and wild dogs are also found in Samburu. The park is also rich in bird life, hosting over 350 species. Samburu is one of the two areas where Elsa the lioness, of Born Free fame, was raised by George and Joy Adamson.

Another highlight is encountering the traditional Samburu people, with their indigenous culture that still follows ancient practices.

We then drive to our next game-viewing destination which is the Aberdare National Park – created in 1950 to protect the forested slopes and moors of the Aberdare Mountains.

We stay at the Ark Tree Lodge or the Treetops  Lodge. Watch the animals that frequently visit the lively waterhole beside the lodge, from a series of viewing decks and areas at different levels.

Spotting animals at the floodlit salt-lick and watering hole into the night, with common visitors including elephant, lion, rhino, black leopard, and the beautiful but elusive bongo antelope.

We then drive to Lake Nakuru, one of the Great Lakes of East Africa’s Rift Valley. Lake Nakuru National Park – is renowned as a bird sanctuary with over 400 bird species, including huge flocks of flamingoes and many other water birds.

It is an excellent park for wildlife spotting and is home to many water-loving animals such as hippos and waterbucks. Other animals present in the park include waterbucks, warthogs, impalas, buffalo, Rothschild giraffes, elands, endangered black rhinos, white rhinos, and, occasionally leopards.

Then the time has come to explore Masai Mara – one of the most famous game parks on the planet, considered by many to be the finest wildlife safari destination in all of Africa. The Masai Mara provides the best view of the famous wildebeest migration as the animals cross the Mara River between July and August.

The Mara is also home to the richest concentration of wildlife, including the “Big Five” (elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos, and buffalo), zebras, antelope, gnus, Oribis, hyenas, giraffes, warthogs, gazelles, hartebeests, hippos, crocodiles, and others.

The park has the largest concentration of African lions, including the black-maned lion. Bird life is as plentiful as wildlife at the Masai Mara, which boasts over 400 different bird species.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi – Drive to Samburu Game Reserve

Breakfast at the hotel, then we hit the road in our 4×4 safari vehicle, driving north to the Samburu National Reserve. Our long drive takes us through rural farmlands to the remote Samburu County.

We arrive at our lodge or camp in time for lunch and some free time to settle in and unwind at the pool.

Then we embark on our first 4×4 game drive in Samburu National Reserve, situated along the Ewaso Ng’iro River. The river attracts and supports the wildlife of Samburu in this otherwise arid part of Kenya.

We drive through the park in our pop-up roof safari vehicle taking in the grasslands, river forests and acacia trees while searching for wildlife.

We may come across lions, cheetahs and leopards, and are likely to see elephants, hippos and buffalos. Grevy’s zebras, oryx, giraffes, gerenuks, other antelopes and wild dogs are also found in Samburu.

The park is also rich in birdlife, hosting over 350 species. Samburu is one of the two areas where Elsa the lioness, of Born Free fame, was raised by George and Joy Adamson. Another highlight is encountering the traditional Samburu people, with their indigenous culture that still follows ancient practices.

Day 2: Samburu – Drive to Aberdare or Mount Kenya National Park (Forest Tree Lodge)

This morning we depart Samburu and proceed south to The Ark forest Lodge or Treetops Lodge. After lunch and high tea, set off for the Ark tree lodge, located in the forest on mountain slopes of the Aberdare Mountains at 7,000 feet.

This outstanding lodge offers high-altitude game viewing, including animals that are rarely encountered elsewhere: giant forest hog, bush pig, tree hyrax, large spotted genet, and the elusive bongo.

Wildlife can be observed from different levels – and from outside where you can see, hear and smell everything and inside where you can sit with a cup of tea and stay warm and cozy.

You can put in a request to be awakened during the night if your favourite animals show up. A herd of Elephants might be just feet away and if you are lucky, a Leopard or large male Lion might put in an appearance.

Day 3: Aberdare or Mount Kenya National Park – Lake Nakuru National Park

Today we travel to the exotic Lake Nakuru National Park located in the Great Rift Valley. After lunch, an exciting game run is planned for the afternoon. The game in this park is plentiful and the magnificent bird-watching will make a devotee out of even the most reluctant.

Highlights on our 4×4 game drive may include sightings of tree-climbing lions and both black and white rhinos, for which the reserve is better known today. Commonly sighted animals include giraffes, baboons, zebras, buffalos, antelopes and hippos, with rare finds including leopards.

It is also one of the very few places in Africa to see the white Rhino and rare Rothschild Giraffe.

This enormous reserve is actually part of the vast Serengeti plains famously known for its spectacular great wildebeest migration and is home to the Big Five: Lion, Elephant, Leopard, Buffalo, and Rhino.

Lunch at our Lodge and relax before departing for the afternoon game run. In this dream safari landscape of undulating plains scattered with acacias, we look out for the diverse and abundant wildlife of Mara.

We may come across herds of wildebeest, elephants, zebras and antelopes, along with prides of lions, coalitions of cheetahs, a crash of rhinos and lone leopards.
