6-Day Kenya Safari Samburu, Aberdare, Lake Nakuru & Masai Mara Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi to Samburu National Reserve

0630 Hours – 0700 Hours: Depart Nairobi; drive north past Mount Kenya.
1300 Hours: Arrive at Samburu; check-in and lunch at your lodge (e.g., Samburu Lodge)
1600 Hours – 1830 Hours: Evening game drive to spot the “Samburu Special Five” (Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, gerenuk)

Day 2: Samburu to Aberdare National Park

0630 Hours – 0800 Hours: Early morning game drive in Samburu
0830 Hours: Breakfast at the lodge, followed by check-out
0900 Hours – 1300 Hours: Drive south to the Aberdare region
1300 Hours: Lunch at the base hotel (Aberdare Country Club)
1430 Hours: Transfer to your tree lodge (The Ark) for afternoon forest viewing

Day 3: Aberdare to Lake Nakuru National Park

1230 Hours: Arrive at Lake Nakuru; check in and have lunch at your lodge

Day 4: Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara National Reserve

This 6-day 4×4 wildlife journey combines excellent game viewing at four of Kenya’s best wildlife areas with diverse cultural activities and plenty to see and do. The tour visits Samburu Game Reserve, Aberdare National Park, Lake Nakuru National Park, and the Masai Mara Game Reserve.

Beginning in Nairobi, the tour travels north to Samburu National Reserve – not very well known but definitely worth a visit. Samburu National Reserve is situated on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River in Kenya.

We spend time here on game drives where we may come across lions, cheetahs, and leopards, and are likely to see elephants, hippos, and buffalo.

Grevy’s zebras, oryx, giraffes, gerenuks, other antelopes, and wild dogs are also found in Samburu. The park is also rich in bird life, hosting over 350 species. Samburu is one of the two areas where Elsa the lioness, of Born Free fame, was raised by George and Joy Adamson.

Another highlight is encountering the traditional Samburu people, whose indigenous culture still follows ancient practices. We then drive to our next game-viewing destination, which is the Aberdare National Park – created in 1950 to protect the forested slopes and moors of the Aberdare Mountains.

We stay at the Ark Tree Lodge or the Treetops  Lodge. Watch the animals that frequently visit the lively waterhole beside the lodge, from a series of viewing decks and areas at different levels.

Spotting animals at the floodlit salt-lick and watering hole into the night, with common visitors including elephant, lion, rhino, black leopard, and the beautiful but elusive bongo antelope.

We then drive to Lake Nakuru, one of the Great Lakes of East Africa’s Rift Valley. Lake Nakuru National Park is renowned as a bird sanctuary with over 400 bird species, including huge flocks of flamingoes and many other water birds.

It is an excellent park for wildlife spotting and is home to many water-loving animals such as hippos and waterbucks. Other animals present in the park include waterbucks, warthogs, impalas, buffalo, Rothschild giraffes, elands, endangered black rhinos, white rhinos, and, occasionally, leopards.

Then the time has come to explore the Masai Mara – one of the most famous game parks on the planet, considered by many to be the finest wildlife safari destination in all of Africa. The Masai Mara provides the best view of the famous wildebeest migration as the animals cross the Mara River between July and August.

The Mara is also home to the richest concentration of wildlife, including the “Big Five” (elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos, and buffalo), zebras, antelope, gnus, Oribis, hyenas, giraffes, warthogs, gazelles, hartebeests, hippos, crocodiles, and others.

The park has the largest concentration of African lions, including the black-maned lion. Birdlife is as plentiful as the wildlife in the Masai Mara, which boasts over 400 bird species.
