Amboseli National Park is a top destination for a Kenya Safari. The park is small but a rewarding safari destination in southern Kenya on the border of Tanzania.
Amboseli is a great choice for first-time safari goers or first-timers to Kenya. The park is 39,206 hectares (392 km2; 151 sq miles) in size and allows you to see virtually every aspect in about 2 days and its proximity to Nairobi means you don’t have to follow a long-haul flight with a very long drive or another longish flight.
Short flights between Wilson Airport in Nairobi and the Amboseli airstrip take less than an hour in a light aircraft. While Kilimanjaro is actually across the border in Tanzania, Amboseli has a perfect view of this world’s tallest freestanding mountain, rising an impressive 5 km above the plains.
It’s easy to spot Lions and can occasionally be watched stalking their prey. But you should see masses of bird-life. Other animals include bat-eared foxes (a very rare sighting), giraffe, lion, buffalo, cheetah, and non-migrating wildebeest. Look out for Thomson’s gazelle, Maasai giraffe; Burchell’s or plains zebra; and plenty of spotted hyena (known as ‘spotties’ – there are no brown hyena here).
We can’t guarantee the Big 5 in Amboseli: leopard and rhino are virtually non-existent here. But don’t let that deter you as they are easily found elsewhere in Kenya (Lewa is fantastic for rhino and the Masai Mara for leopard).
Elephants are commonly sighted and many are known by name by the guides because they’ve been studied by researchers at the Amboseli Elephant Research Centre. There are over 1000 elephants in the Park.
Amboseli is also the home of the Maasai people, those tall, proud nomads whose legendary prowess in battle and single-handed acts of bravery in fights with wild animals has spread across the globe. Perhaps more than any other communities in Kenya the Maasai have learned to live in complete harmony with their environment and the wildlife which surrounds them.

The lodge is situated 240 km from Nairobi and 16 km from Amboseli airstrip. AA Lodge Amboseli is built in a three-tier architectural design and commands a panoramic view of the snow-capped Mt. Amboseli Bush Camp – Amboseli National Park
Amboseli Bush Camp is a self-catering rustic bush camp located in Kimana area just outside Amboseli National Park in the foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro. The closest airport is Amboseli National Park Airstrip. The cottage lies close to the Tanzanian border with magnificent views of snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro. Amboseli Public Campsite – kimana Amboseli National Park
Amboseli Public campsite is a campground located on the southeastern end of Amboseli national park. The campsite is located 200 metres from the Amboseli National Park Headquarters – Kimana and 240 km from Nairobi. The camp has very basic facilities and can accommodate up to 60 campers. facilities provided includes firewood, toilet facilities, water and bathroom. Guests need to carry their own drinking water, food supply, sleeping bags and their own tents. Amboseli Public campsite has a cooking area where guests are welcomed to prepare their own meals. In the evenings guests can set up a bonfire under the starry skies and catch up with other guests. There is a small bar selling warm beer and soft drinks.

Kimana Amboseli Tented Camp is situated North West of Mt. Kilimanjaro, on the border with Tanzania, and only 2 km from the Kimana main gate. The camp has good views of Mount Kilimanjaro and is about 228 km away from Nairobi via Emali. Kimana Amboseli Camp is a great-value tented camp that has 20 permanent tents and six cottages, all of which enjoy electricity and 24-hour hot water, although the bathrooms are extremely simple in both cases. There’s a restaurant, pool, and guest lounge. Amboseli Airstrip is located 15 km away. The cottages have double beds and en-suite bathrooms. The tents have mosquito nets and verandahs with safari chairs. The bathrooms are not en-suite. There is also a large camping ground where guests can pitch their own tents. There are shared bathrooms with flush toilets and the showers have heated water. In the camp, there is a communal fully equipped kitchen where guests can prepare their own meals. At Kimana Amboseli Tented Camp there is an onsite restaurant with local Maasai decor that serves local cuisine. Guests can enjoy their meals in the mess tent or in outdoors.
