A wonderful 6-day trip that will take in Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha, and, of course, the fabled Masai Mara in Kenya. Beginning and ending in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, your tour travels to Lake Nakuru National Park, which surrounds the lake and was first gazetted to protect the rich bird life, later becoming a sanctuary for endangered species such as the rhino.

There are about 25 white and black rhinos, one of the largest concentrations in the country. Predators are also residents of this park, while Rothschild’s giraffes have been translocated into the park for safety. Lake Nakuru has retained its reputation as an ornithologist’s delight, with more than 400 species of birds found here.

Bird species include the Great White Pelican, African Spoonbill, Yellow-billed Stork, Lesser and Greater Flamingo, and Long-crested Eagle. The small park (180 sq km) is also home to warthogs, waterbuck, buffaloes, reedbuck, and the occasional leopard.

After a night in Lake Nakuru, we journey towards Lake Naivasha.  We visit Crescent Island Conservancy for a foot safari. There is a lot of easy-to-see game, e.g., giraffes, waterbucks, elands, wildebeests, buffalo, zebras, hyenas, and impalas.

It is also a haven for birds, with over 200 species recorded. The lake has many hippos, which you can easily spot on the island. We also visit other Lake Naivasha attractions, such as Mount Longonot National Park for hiking, and Elsamere Conservation Center, once home to Joy Adamson of ‘Born Free’ fame.

Our next destination is the Masai Mara Game Reserve. The Masai Mara shares its southern boundary with Tanzania’s Serengeti, and herbivores cross the Mara River into Kenya from July onwards in search of better grazing.

Followed by lions, hyenas, and other predators, the vast herds of migrating herbivores cross southwards again from around late October. You may be lucky enough to see a river crossing as hundreds of wildebeest, zebra, topis, and gazelles brave the waters filled with waiting crocodiles during your Masai Mara safari.

The Mara is also home to the richest concentration of wildlife, including the “Big Five” (elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos, and buffalo), zebras, antelope, gnus, Oribis, hyenas, giraffes, warthogs, gazelles, hartebeests, hippos, crocodiles, and others.

The reserve has the largest concentration of African lions, including the black-maned lion. Birdlife is as plentiful as the wildlife in the Masai Mara, which boasts over 400 bird species.

Lake Naivasha lies in the Great Rift Valley, and the name derives from the local Masai name Nai’posha, meaning “rough water” because of the sudden storms that can arise.

After lunch, we visit Crescent Island – a private sanctuary, where you can walk beneath yellow-barked acacias (yellow fever trees) in search of giraffes, wildebeest, impala, dik-diks, Thompson’s and grant’s gazelles, elands, waterbucks, and countless bird species.

Oh, and there are some rather gigantic pythons, too! We are allowed to walk with the animals since all were introduced during the filming of Out of Africa.
