Tsavo West National Park Mombasa Safari 3 Days 2 Nights (from Mombasa

This 3-day/ 2-night Tsavo West safari from Mombasa offers fantastic value for money and an unbeatable African bush vacation from the beaches of Mombasa. This Tsavo West safari offers a thrilling dive into volcanic landscapes and big game, typically starting with a 0600 Hours pick-up.

The tour includes early-morning/ late-afternoon game drives to maximize wildlife sightings, as well as visits to Mzima Springs, the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, and the Shetani lava flows.

Our 3-Day/2-night Tsavo West safari from Mombasa Itinerary highlights include

Chaimu Crater: A tall volcanic hill covered in black lava stones that you can hike for spectacular vistas of the surrounding plains
Five Sisters Hills: A cluster of five almost identical cone-shaped volcanic hills that create a striking silhouette against the savannah

Lake Jipe: Located on the border with Tanzania, this alkaline lake is excellent for boating excursions and spotting aquatic birds and hippos
The Man-Eaters of Tsavo: The park is home to the legendary “man-eating” lions, notorious for halting railway construction in 1898
Birdwatcher’s Paradise: With over 600 recorded species, the park is a top destination for birding, featuring specialists like the Somali Ostrich and Martial Eagle
The “Red Elephants“: Like in Tsavo East, the elephants here are famous for their reddish appearance, caused by dust-bathing in the park’s vibrant red volcanic soil
First World War Sites: The park was a major battleground between British and German forces; you can visit historical sites commemorating the East African campaign

Mzima Springs: A lush oasis where millions of gallons of crystal-clear water gush from under parched lava rocks daily. It features an underwater viewing chamber where you can watch hippos, crocodiles, and barbel fish from a unique perspective.
Shetani Lava Flow: A massive 8 km long field of black volcanic rock formed just a few hundred years ago. Its name, meaning “devil” in Swahili, comes from local legends of the earth opening in fury. You can explore the nearby Shetani Caves with a flashlight
Roaring Rocks: A popular lookout point named for the sound of wind whistling through the rocks (or the roar of local lions). It offers panoramic views of the Rhino Valley and, on clear days, the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro
Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary: A critical 90 sq km enclosure dedicated to protecting the endangered black rhino. It is one of the best places in Kenya to spot these elusive creatures, especially from the raised overnight viewing platform

Tsavo West National Park

Beginning and ending in Mombasa, this 3-day Tsavo West National Park road safari offers a rare opportunity to explore one of Kenya’s most renowned game-viewing areas.

Tsavo West National Park is located 260 kilometers from Mombasa (through Mutito Gate), west of its sister, Tsavo East National Park, and is approximately 188 km West of Mombasa (through Tsavo Gate near Manyani).

Tsavo West National Park encompasses mountains and hills for climbing, savanna bush and semi-arid desert scrub, acacia woodland, palm thickets, rivers, and the tranquil Lake Jipe, home to the Kudu – one of Kenya’s animals found in Tsavo.

There are many tourist attractions in Tsavo West National Park, from safari tours to see the red elephants to bird watching and hill hiking to caving and boating. Tsavo West is home to the largest population of red elephants as well as to members of the rest of the “Big 5” African animals (buffalo, African lions, leopards, and rhinos).

Tsavo West National Park is just a few degrees south of the equator. The temperature remains the same throughout the year, at 27-31°C (81-88°F) during the day and 22-24°C (72-75°F) at night.

Humidity is high from December through April. The rainfall defines the seasons. The long rainy season, or monsoon season, is from March to May. The shorter rains come from October through December.

The safari includes all road transport in a mini-van or a 4×4 safari vehicle, the services of a professional safari driver-guide, full-board accommodation in superb-quality, well-located lodges/camps, game drives, nature walks, and bird watching, and all park entrance fees.

Tsavo West National Park Highlights | What to See and Do

Tsavo West Game Drives: Tsavo West is home to the largest population of red elephants as well as to members of the rest of the “Big 5” African animals (buffalo, African lions, leopards, and rhinos).

There are other animals like hippos, cheetahs, hartebeest, and buffalo.

Lake Jipe:  Lake Jipe attracts a lot of wildlife and is a good place for bird watching. It is fed by the run-off from Mount Kilimanjaro and the North Pare Mountains.

Take a boat excursion on the lake, or explore the swamps at each end.

Mzima Springs: Mzima Springs is at the north end of Tsavo West. Water from the Chyulu Hills runs from beneath the lava ridge and forms several natural pools.

Fringed with palm trees, these pools are popular watering holes for birds and African wildlife. You can also watch the hippos bathing underwater here.

Lava Flows and Caves: Visit the Lava Flows and Caves for geological interest; explore the caves or hike along with the lava flow.

Bird-watching safaris: The park has many migratory birds including African skimmers, red and yellow bishops, goshawks, buffalo weavers, and palm nut vultures, to name a few.

Over 500 bird species have been recorded in the park, including ostriches, kestrels, buzzards, starlings, weavers, kingfishers, hornbills, secretary birds, and herons.

Cliff faces in Tsavo West: These offer some of the best rock climbing in Kenya. The views over the savanna plains are spectacular, and Mt. Kilimanjaro can also be seen on occasion.
