Ark Lodge

Beginning and ending in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, this 6-day overland safari offers an amazing itinerary with an opportunity to explore two of the most famous Rift Valley lakes – Naivasha and Baringo – taking in their fabulous birdlife and range of animals.

The safari also includes two popular parks, Aberdare National Park and the famous Masai Mara Game Reserve. Your safari begins with a road trip to the Aberdare National Park situated about 180kms north of Nairobi and we stay at either the well-known Tree-Tops Lodge or Ark Lodge.

Both lodges overlook a salt lick and floodlit waterhole to deliver the park’s best from-your-chair game viewing. If you want, you can even be alerted at night in the event of a special sighting. The park is home to a rare antelope species – the bongo – an elusive antelope that lives in the bamboo forest.

Other forest species such as elephants, black rhinos, spotted hyenas, olive baboons, black and white Colobus monkeys, buffaloes, warthogs, bushbucks and leopards are seen regularly along with around 250 bird species.

From the Aberdare we drive to Lake Bogoria with a brief stop at Thompson Falls in Nyahururu. Lake Bogoria is popular for its spectacular Flamingo populations; the surrounding bush and grassland are home to several animals.

The Reserve’s herd of rare Greater Kudu make it unique and other game to view includes buffalo (rare), zebra, baboon, warthog, caracal, spotted hyena, impala, dik-dik, and many small mammals.

Next, we visit Lake Nakuru National Park – Kenya’s first rhino sanctuary and an important sanctuary for rhinos. The lake also offers you a chance to witness one of the world’s most spectacular wildlife sights: brilliant pink flamingos as far as the eye can see.

Game viewing is also good. It is home to warthog, baboon, waterbuck, endangered Rothschild Giraffe, zebra and large numbers of impala. Slightly shyer residents include buffalo, eland, the occasional leopard and hippo.

The tour finishes off with Kenya’s showpiece, the Masai Mara. The Mara is most famous for the annual Wildebeest Migration and remains an excellent wildlife destination at any time of year.

You have time for morning and afternoon game drives in search of big cats, wild dogs and heavyweight animals such as elephant, rhino and buffalo.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi – Drive to Aberdare National Park

Depart Nairobi after breakfast. Our destination today is the Aberdare National Park. We travel overland through plantations of coffee and tea to The Aberdare Country Club, nestled on the slopes of Mweiga Hill.

After lunch and tea/coffee or Hot chocolate, set off for the Ark tree lodge, located in the forest on mountain slopes of the Aberdare Mountains at 7,000 feet.

This outstanding lodge offers high altitude game viewing, including animals that are rarely encountered elsewhere: giant forest hog, bush pig, tree hyrax, large spotted genet, and the elusive bongo.

Wildlife can be observed from different levels — and from outside where you can see, hear and smell everything and inside where you can sit with a cup of tea and stay warm and cozy.

You can put in a request to be awakened during the night if your favorite animals show up. A herd of Elephants might be just feet away and if you are lucky, a Leopard or large male Lion might put in an appearance.
