This 5-day itinerary covers the iconic landscapes and rich wildlife of Amboseli and Tsavo West National Parks. It involves roughly 4 to 5 hours of daily driving between destinations, with peak game viewing in the early mornings and late afternoons.
Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli National Park
0730 Hours – 0800 Hours: Pick-up from Nairobi hotel or airport and drive south along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
1200 Hours: Arrival in Amboseli. Check in and enjoy a relaxed lunch at your lodge.
1530 Hours – 1830 Hours: Afternoon game drive. Look out for massive elephant herds against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro
Day 2: Full Day in Amboseli
0630 Hours – 0900 Hours: Early morning game drive. This is the best time to see predators and get clear, snow-capped views of Mt. Kilimanjaro
0930 Hours – 1230 Hours: Return to the lodge for breakfast and leisure time. You can also opt for a mid-morning visit to a Maasai village
1230 Hours – 1530 Hours: Lunch at the camp and time to rest during the hottest part of the day
1600 Hours – 1830 Hours: Late afternoon game drive to explore the park’s swamp network
Day 3: Amboseli to Tsavo West National Park
0730 Hours – 0830 Hours: Early breakfast and check-out. Drive towards Tsavo West (approx.3 to 4.5 hours).
1200 Hours: Arrive in Tsavo West, entering through the Kimana or Mtito Andei gate with an en-route game drive. Check in and lunch at your lodge
1530 Hours – 1830 Hours: Afternoon game drive. Visit the Mzima Springs to view hippos and crocodiles from the underwater glass viewing hide
Day 4: Exploring Tsavo West
0630 Hours – 0900 Hours: Early morning safari to explore volcanic landscapes, including the Shetani Lava Flow
0900 Hours– 1530 Hours: Breakfast, followed by a midday break at the lodge. Afternoon activities include a visit to the Rhino Sanctuary
1600 Hours – 1830 Hours: Late afternoon game drive, followed by dinner and overnight at the lodge
Day 5: Tsavo West to Nairobi
0630 Hours – 0830 Hours: Final early morning game drive to catch the sunrise over the savannah
0830 Hours – 1000 Hours: Return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast and check out
1030 Hours: Depart Tsavo West for the return drive to Nairobi (approx. 4 to 5 Hours), arriving in the late afternoon


This 5-day road safari brings together Kenya’s top wildlife destinations – Amboseli and Tsavo West National Parks. The tour begins in Nairobi and could end either in Nairobi or Mombasa on the Kenyan coast.
Your safari begins with a drive to Amboseli National Park, most famous for its views of elephants. Located 160 miles from Nairobi, Amboseli National Park offers stunning views of both Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru.
As well as its famously photogenic elephants, Amboseli is home to heavyweight predators like lions, leopards, hyenas, and cheetahs, as well as their prey, such as buffalo, giraffe, impala, zebra, and antelope.
Amboseli boasts rich bird life, with over 400 bird species recorded, including the globally threatened Madagascar Pond-Heron, Lesser Flamingo, Lesser Kestrel, and Possibly Africa’s most sought-after bird, the Shoebill, which has a one-time record in the area, as well as over 40 birds of prey.
After 2 nights in Amboseli, we drive to one of Africa’s largest conservation areas, Tsavo, home to red elephants as well as members of the rest of the “Big 5” African animals (buffalo, African lions, leopards, and rhinos).
Tsavo West offers some of the most magnificent game viewing in the world, and attractions include elephants, rhinos, Hippos, lions, cheetahs, leopards, buffalo, diverse plant and bird species, including the threatened corncrake and near-threatened Basra Reed Warbler.
Visit attractions such as Mzima Springs to watch the hippos bathing underwater, visit the Lava flows and caves for geological interest; explore the caves, or hike along with the lava flow.
The cliff faces in Tsavo West offer some of the best rock climbing in Kenya.
5 Days Kenya Safari Amboseli Tsavo West National Park Detalied Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi – Drive to Amboseli National Park
0800 Hours: After breakfast at the hotel in Nairobi, we depart by road and drive through the scenic Athi Plains and into the bush country of Amboseli National Park. Amboseli is home to the legendary Masai tribesmen and is famous for huge herds of elephants.
1200 Hours: Upon arrival at our lodge, we check in and lunch follows. Later, we have some time to relax, swim, and enjoy the camps/ lodge grounds.
1530 Hours: We have our afternoon tea/ coffee/ hot chocolate before setting out on the afternoon game drive.
Amboseli offers some of the best opportunities to see African animals because its vegetation is sparse due to the long dry months.
Amboseli National Park is home to wild animals, including the African elephant, buffalo, impala, lion, cheetah, hyena, giraffe, zebra, and wildebeest.
There is also a host of Kenyan birds, both large and small, to see if you keep your eyes open and stop at every sighting.
1830 Hours: Return to the camp/ lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Full Day in Amboseli National Park
0630 Hours: Rising early for good views of Mount Kilimanjaro before clouds build up over the summit, we set off for another stimulating game drive. Amboseli is an excellent place to view a wide variety of wildlife, including African elephants, buffalo, impalas, lions, cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, zebras, and wildebeest.
0900 Hours: We return to our lodge/ camp for breakfast. The rest of the morning is at leisure, or you may opt to visit a Masai village to learn more about Masai culture and customs.
1000 Hours: You will learn how Masai huts are made from dung, how to start a fire, how to milk a goat, and enjoy their traditional dances, where they jump and sing.
Later, you may visit the Masai market where they sell crafts. All this with Mount Kilimanjaro in the backdrop.
1200 Hours: Midday finds us at our lodge/camp for lunch and an afternoon rest, followed by another extensive game drive at 1530 Hours.
1830 Hours: We return to camp for evening cocktails at the bar, followed by dinner.

Day 3: Amboseli – Drive to Tsavo West National Park
0630 Hours: We enjoy an early morning game drive in Amboseli National Park. The park is known for its large herd of over 900 free-ranging elephants. This is the best national park to visit to see these wonderful and huge creatures.
0900 Hours: Following breakfast, we drive to Tsavo West National Park. We make a special stop at Mzima Springs, where from an underwater tank; it is sometimes possible to watch hippos along the floor of these crystal springs.
1300 Hours: Arrive in time for lunch. An afternoon game drive is planned. Tsavo is also famous for its large herds of elephants, black rhinos, hartebeest, and zebra. Lion, leopard, and wild dogs.

Day 4: Full Day in Tsavo West National Park
Two game drives are scheduled for today. The extensive, diverse habitats offer an ideal setting for searching for lions, buffalo, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, hippos, and wildebeest. The Park is a vast expansion of the African savanna, with a more diverse array of habitats, including open plains, semi-desert scrub, woodland, the Chyulu Hills, and rock outcrops.
It’s famous for the Red Elephants, Oryx, and Gerenuk, among other mammal species and bird life.
Other notable features include Mzima Springs, a water source for Mombasa Town, and the Shetani Lava Flow and Ash cones, which are examples of recent volcanic eruptions. The movie, The Ghost and the Darkness, was shot here.

0900 Hours: After breakfast, depart for Mombasa or Nairobi, arriving late afternoon. As our adventure comes to a close, enjoy the beaches and sights of Mombasa or a city tour of Nairobi on your own.
