Ol Pejeta Conservancy

This 4-day Safari combines two of Kenya’s finest wildlife areas, Ol Pejeta Conservancy and Samburu National Reserve. It offers you great chances of seeing all the see the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo).

The safari begins from Nairobi where you travel by road to the scenic Ol Pejeta Conservancy – a 90 000 acre (360 km²) non-profit wildlife conservancy located in the foothills of the Aberdare Mountain Range and Mount Kenya, near Nanyuki town in the Laikipia District of Kenya.

Ol Pejeta is East Africa’s largest black rhino sanctuary and the only place in Kenya to view chimpanzees (Kenya’s only chimpanzee sanctuary). It is home to the Big Five of Africa (elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo and leopard).

Other animals include hippo, giraffe, baboon, monkey, aardvark, ostrich, lions, cheetahs, leopards, spotted hyenas, as well as a pack of African wild dogs and over 300 species of birds. Activities at Ol Pejeta Conservancy include game walks, horse rides, camel rides, game drives and night drives.

After spending a night at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, we proceed to Samburu National Reserve situated 185 km north of Ol Pejeta Conservancy.  Samburu is bordered to the south by Ewaso Nyiro River, which separates it from the Buffalo Springs National Reserve.

The reserve is reach in wildlife with fame for abundance in rare northern specialist species such as the Grevy Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Reticulated Giraffe, Gerenuk and the Beisa Oryx (Also referred as Samburu Special). Other animals include crocodiles, cheetah, lion, leopards, buffalo, hippo, gerenuk and wild dog etc. 

The reserve is also a paradise for bird lovers, with over 350 species of birds already recorded. You can enjoy a colorful assortment of birds such as vultures, kingfishers, marabous, bateleurs, guinea fowl, Somali ostriches, and many more.

You will also have an opportunity to interact with the colorful Samburu tribe and learn about their culture and ways of life. After two nights in Samburu, we journey back to the bustling city of Nairobi city by road.

4 Days 3 Nights Sweetwaters Olpejeta Samburu Kenya Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi – Drive to Sweetwaters/ Ol Pejeta Conservancy

0800 Hours: After breakfast, our Safari departs from Nairobi and proceeds north, driving through lush tea and coffee estates to arrive in time for lunch at your lodge/ camp.

1200 Hours: We enjoy lunch then we relax before setting out on an afternoon game-drive in Conservancy which is East Africa’s Largest Black Rhino Sanctuary, the only place in Kenya to see chimpanzees and holds some of the highest predator densities in Kenya.

Extra activities such as game walk, night game drives, horseback, guided bush walks, lion tracking, camel rides, bird watching, game viewing from blinds, and meals in the bush are available upon request.

Day 2: Sweetwaters/ Ol Pejeta Conservancy – Drive to Samburu Game Reserve

0800 Hours: This morning we travel by road to Kenya’s Northern Frontier District. Wild and rugged, Samburu is fiercely beautiful with its arid savannahs watered by the lovely Uaso Nyiro River.

It is also one of Kenya’s most protected areas and home to species only found north of the equator, from the reticulated giraffe to Grevy’s zebras and Beisa oryxes.

1200 Hours: We arrive at our lodge/ camp and check-in. Lunch follows.

1530 Hours: In the afternoon we explore the park in search of Lions, Leopard, Cheetah, Buffalos, etc.

Day 3: Full Day in Samburu National Reserve

This full day in the Samburu Game Reserve will be spent searching for the big five, the Samburu five, and observing the vast unspoiled scenery during morning and afternoon game viewing drives.

Samburu game reserve is renowned for its rare species of animals unique to the park, namely: the long-necked gerenuk, Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, and Beisa onyx.

The elusive Kenya leopard is often known to visit the park, especially in the evenings. Other Kenyan wildlife present in the park includes cheetahs and lions, as well as elephants, buffalo, and hippos.

Birdlife is as plentiful as wildlife at Samburu National Reserve, which boasts over 350 different species of birds including vultures, kingfishers, marabous, bateleurs, guinea fowl, Somali ostriches, and others.

A camel-back safari is a specialty in Samburu, as well as a cultural visit to the Samburu people who depend on their cattle, goat, sheep, and donkey.

Day 4: Samburu Game Reserve – Drive to Nairobi

0630 Hours – 0830 Hours: Enjoy an early morning Game-drive.

1000 Hours: Check-out of the hotel and depart by road back to Nairobi arriving late afternoon.
