Malindi Watamu full day trip excursion explores the main tourist attractions of Malindi and Watamu.

Our tour begins after breakfast at our hotel in Malindi where start with a visit of Malindi Town, an idyllic seaside town that is deeply rooted in a colorful history that began in 1498 when Vasco de Gama first visited the location.

From the winding streets to the centuries-old houses, you will see the story of Malindi unfold before your eyes.

We take a tour to enjoy the colors and smell typically African through the old market area, stalls of spices, heaps of pineapples and watermelons, the jewelry shops in semiprecious stones, local crafts in wood, soapstone and batik.

One of the most prominent landmarks on the tour of Malindi is the Church of St. Francis Xavier, one of the oldest in East Africa that is situated near the Vasco de Gama Pillar.

You also visit the Juma Mosque and learn about the unfortunate use of the structure for slave trading until the late nineteenth century.

A visit to the ruins of Gedi near Watamu takes you to the site of an abandoned coastal town that is surrounded by an intriguing mystery that lies within the remains of mosques, houses and other archaeological finds.

Your touring time at Gedi includes tombs, the king's palace, artifacts and a sunken court.

Enjoy sea food and coastal cuisine lunch in Watamu.

Your Malindi day excursion also includes a glass bottom boat ride in the Malindi Marine Park where you look into the depths of the Indian Ocean to observe marine life in a natural setting and snorkeling can also be arranged.

Malindi Museum Day Tour Malindi Museum Day Tour Malindi Museum Day Tour

Malindi Museum Day Tour combines a visit of the Malindi Museum, a stroll through Malindi’ old town, a visit Vasco da Gama’s pillar and the Portuguese chapel built before St. Francis Xavier visited Malindi in 1542.

Malindi Museum is located east of Malindi town, next to Uhuru gardens on Uhuru road, along the seafront and a few meters from Malindi jetty and Fish Market.

The museum doubles as an information centre where visitors are able to find more information on attractions and happenings in Malindi.

Malindi Museum building is dubbed as “House of Columns” and is believed to have been built by local traders and acted as a hospital until 1952 and then as the Malindi Fisheries Office.

Sir Richard Leakey then handed over the building to the National Museums of Kenya in 1999.

With life-size models of humans, houses, musical instruments as well as household instruments, the Malindi museum is indeed a reservoir of Swahili history.

There are also lots of written historical facts which are framed on the walls within the building.

Many exhibits in the museum tell the story of Malindi especially the cast of a coelacanth fish which was caught off the coast of Malindi in 2001.

The earliest coelacanth fossils date back 400 million years ago.

Takwa Ruins Manda Island Historical Day Tour Lamu is an excursion to a historical site called the Takwa settlement situated on the south side of Manda Island, in the Lamu District in the coastal province of Kenya.

Manda Island where Takwa ruins are found is one of the 4 main Islands of the Lamu archipelago. The others are Lamu Island, Pate Island and Kiwayu Island.

Takwa settlement is an ancient Swahili village on Manda Island and was founded around year 15th century and was abandoned in the 17th century due to salination of the once fresh water and endless fighting between the Takwa and Pate people.

The ruins were first excavated by James Kirkman in 1951, then in 1972 more clearing of the site was done under the supervision of James de Vere Allen.

They were gazetted as a National Monument in 1982. The ruins nest amidst giant baobab trees.

The Great Mosque at Takwa is relatively well preserved. The other structure remaining of importance is the Pillar Tomb, which has an inscription with the date of 1681 -1682.

Manda Island is a 30-minute boat ride from neighboring Lamu (9.2 km's away). Once you arrive at the ruins, the guided adventure begins with a walk across a raised walkway, above the mangroves.

Once you get to the ruins you will get a guided tour and information about the history behind the village buildings, which are mostly ruins.

Later you walk to see the coastline to see stunning view of the ocean from a sand dune.

This is a half day trip and it can be organized by speed boat and by dhow (30 minutes), depending on the tide level.
