8 Day Kenya Safari Meru Nakuru Naivasha Masai Mara from Nairobi

This 8-day Kenya road safari takes you off the beaten track to the savannahs of Meru National Park, then across the Kenyan central highlands and along the Rift Valley, visiting both Lake Nakuru National Park and Lake Naivasha, then winding up in the world-famous Maasai Mara National Reserve.

Beginning and ending in Nairobi, this tour starts with Meru National Park set in the dry wilderness of northern Kenya, far off the beaten track of the regular safari. Meru National Park is also one of the two areas in which conservationists George and Joy Adamson raised Elsa, the lioness of Born Free fame.

Highlights include excellent game viewing, including the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. Other species include giraffe, zebra, waterbuck, kudu, eland and impala to name a few. The bird life is sensational, and it truly is a birder’s paradise with nearly 450 species of birds in riverine, woodland and Savannah habitats.

The tour then continues by road across the Kenyan central highlands and along the Rift Valley, with a brief stopover for photos at Thompson Falls (Nyahururu), then proceeds to Lake Nakuru National Park.

Lake Nakuru covers an area of some 180 km² and its diverse habitats are home to warthog, baboon, waterbuck and large numbers of impala. You can look for black and white rhinos, tree-climbing lions, leopards and Rothschild’s giraffes. A herd of hippos has its territory in the northern part of the lake.

When conditions are right, between one and two million lesser and greater flamingos feed around the shores of the shallow lake, which, together with tens of thousands of other water birds within a species list of around 400 birds, makes Lake Nakuru a genuine ornithologist’s paradise.

After one night at Lake Nakuru, we journey by road to Lake Naivasha, located outside the town of Naivasha and part of the Great Rift Valley. We take a boat ride on the lake, which is home to over 400 bird species, including fish eagles, ospreys, lily-trotters, black crakes, and herons.

There are also opportunities to see a large community of hippos bathing in the water, as well as giraffes, impalas, zebras, and buffalo grazing on the Lake shores.

We also visit Crescent Island private Wildlife Sanctuary and enjoy an easily guided walking safari to see animals such as giraffes, zebra, Thompson’s and Grant’s gazelles, waterbuck, eland, and indeed many bird species.

Then the time has come to explore the Masai Mara – one of the most famous game parks on the planet, considered by many to be the finest wildlife safari destination in all of Africa. The Masai Mara has plenty of wildlife, such as Masai giraffes, baboons, warthogs, bat-eared foxes, grey jackals, spotted hyenas, topis, impalas, hartebeests, and wildebeest.

Elephants, buffalo, zebras, and hippos are also found in great numbers. It is also common to see lions either basking after a heavy meal or surveying the plains for their next meal. Cheetahs and leopards are harder to spot but reasonably common.

Stop in Nanyuki for a short rest, taking pictures of the stunning surroundings and the Mountain, then proceed to Meru National Park, arriving in the early afternoon for a late lunch.

Depart for the afternoon game drive. Meru National Park is home to a large pride of lions, herds of buffalo, and hippos and crocodiles that live in the rivers. The park is noted for its fauna and natural beauty.

Meru has many swamps and rivers lined with palms, as well as mountains and woodlands, and it is the setting for Joy Adamson’s book “Born Free”, which was later made into a successful film.

Meru National Park forms part of a larger wilderness area along the Tana River, including Bisanadi and Mwingi National Reserves, Kora National Park, and Rahole National Reserve.

The wetter north-western sector is hilly, with rich volcanic soils. Numerous permanent streams cross the Park, and three large rivers straddle the reserve: the Tana to the south, the Ura to the southwest, and the Rojeweru to the east.

The park was made famous by the writings of Joy Adamson, best known for her book Born Free, the true story of Elsa, the lioness, and her return to the wild. During the ‘spice’ game drive, the wildlife you are likely to see in Meru includes over 400 bird species.

Depart after breakfast to papyrus-fringed Lake Naivasha. With over 400 bird species, this freshwater lake is a birding Paradise. Along the lake’s fabled waters, we are bound to see some of the area’s more intriguing species—hippos, giraffes, buffalo, and even the arboreal colobus monkey.

Lake Naivasha lies in the Great Rift Valley, and its name derives from the local Masai name Nai’posha, meaning “rough water” because of sudden storms that can arise.

After lunch, we visit Crescent Island -a private sanctuary where you can walk beneath yellow-barked acacias (yellow fever trees) in search of giraffes, wildebeest, impala, dik-diks, Thompson’s and Grant’s gazelles, elands, waterbucks, and countless bird species.

Oh, and there are some rather gigantic pythons too! We are allowed to walk with the animals since all were introduced during the filming of Out of Africa. An optional boat ride on the lake reveals many waterbird species and schools of Hippos.
