Hells Gate National Park

This 10-day road safari takes you through six of Kenya’s top safari destinations to truly discover Kenya’s diverse wildlife and dramatic landscapes.

Over these 10 days, you will also visit the most famous Kenyan parks including Amboseli, Hell’s Gate National Park, Mount Longonot National Park, Lake Nakuru National Park, Lake Bogoria and the Masai Mara which is well-known for its large cat population and home to the annual Wildebeest Migration, a wildlife epic like none other on earth.

Beginning and ending in Nairobi, the trip starts with game drives in Amboseli National Park, a photographer’s paradise combining close-range wildlife sightings with scenic landscapes, featuring the towering Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain.

Amboseli is home to huge populations of Buffalo, Zebra, Wildebeest, giraffes, hippos, Lions, Leopards, Cheetahs and many other species of plains game. The park also boasts an abundance of birds, including Bee-eaters, Kingfishers, Pelicans, African fish Eagles and Falcons.

From Amboseli, we head to Nairobi and stop for lunch at the famous Carnivore restaurant – a meat-lovers paradise before continuing to Lake Naivasha in the Great Rift Valley.

Visit Hell’s Gate National Park perfect for walking and cycling as there are no large predators. Animals such as Burchell’s Zebra, Coke’s Hartebeest, Thomson’s and Grant’s Gazelle and Impala are the main grazers. Giraffes and Defassa Waterbuck can also be encountered.

Then on to Mount Longonot National Park, a popular park for hiking and mountain climbing that takes less than 5 hours to climb up and down. The main attractions of the park include the extinct volcano and crater forest and the views of Lake Naivasha and the Great Rift Valley. It is also a great destination for birding – and in particular birds of prey.

The tour continues to Lake Nakuru National Park, a bird lovers’ paradise with over 400 different bird species, including many water birds. This birding haven hosts species such as the great white pelican, African spoonbill, yellow-billed stork, lesser and greater flamingo, and long-crested eagle.

The Lake Nakuru National Park is known as an important wildlife sanctuary for some of Africa’s endangered species, especially black and white Rhinos, and Rothschild’s Giraffes. The game reserve is home to Lions, Waterbuck, Buffalo and Baboons, which we keep an eye out for on our game drive.

We take a day trip to Lake Bogoria, with its natural hot springs and geysers as the main attractions. The lake has been called ‘the new home of the flamingo’ hosting a migratory population of up to two million of these pink birds at certain times.

It is the high salt and mineral content of this scenic soda lake that attracts huge numbers of flamingos, making the lake a visual delight.

Finally, we head to the world-famous Masai Mara National Reserve. The next few days in Kenya’s premier game reserve, Masai Mara, gives you plenty of time to spot the Big Five and rich array of other wildlife roaming the open plains, as well as visit a local Maasai village to get a taste of traditional Kenyan culture.

Amboseli’s big skies and sweeping horizons attract a variety of animals, particularly the plains-loving kind such as Antelopes, Spotted Hyenas, Jackals, Warthogs, Olive Baboons and Vervet Monkeys. Whilst its swamps are home to Hippo and Buffalo and provide a great spot for the Elephants to wallow.

The ultimate action here is without a doubt the annual wildebeest exodus, the Great Migration, in July and August when millions of these grazers move north from the Serengeti in search of lusher grass before turning south again in October.

The Great Migration of hooved animals, in turn, attracts Africa’s predators, such as Lions, Hyenas and Cheetahs, among others. Hot-air balloon trips are an outstanding way of seeing the savannah plains teeming with wildlife. These Masai Mara balloon trips can be arranged at extra cost.
