7 Day Kenya Safari Amboseli Nakuru & Masai Mara | Begins and ends in Nairobi

Combining some of Kenya’s biggest safari experiences into a week-long itinerary, this overland tour is well-balanced and highly diverse. Experience the absolute best of Kenya’s wildlife, history, and culture by visiting its top three most renowned destinations:

Amboseli National Park: most famous for its large populations of free-ranging African elephants and its iconic, postcard-perfect vistas of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world
Lake Nakuru: world-famous for its massive flocks of pink flamingos and its role as a premier sanctuary for endangered black and white rhinoceroses. Located in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, the lake lies within Lake Nakuru National Park
Masai Mara National Reserve: globally renowned as one of Africa’s premier wildlife and safari destinations. It is particularly famous for three main pillars: the annual Great Migration, an exceptional population of big cats, and its rich indigenous culture

Expect long drives between reserves. The best times to visit for ideal weather and the Great Migration are the dry seasons from July to October and January to February.

After meeting your guide in Nairobi, you begin straight away at Amboseli National Park, close to the Tanzanian border, flanked by Mount Kilimanjaro. Amboseli is a compact game park, abundant in wildlife, making for excellent game viewing.

Amboseli National Park hosts some of Kenya’s largest elephant herds and is famous for its large bull elephants with their impressive tusks. The Park also contains huge populations of buffalo, zebras, wildebeests, giraffes, hippos, and various antelope species, such as impala.

Amboseli National Park is also home to lions, leopards, cheetahs, rhinos, and many other species of plains game. The park also boasts an abundance of birds, including bee-eaters, kingfishers, pelicans, African fish eagles, and falcons.

From Amboseli, we head to the important wildlife sanctuary of Lake Nakuru National Park, via Nairobi and the scenic Great Rift Valley.

Lake Nakuru National Park is home to lions, leopards, and buffalo as well as an enormous number of birds, the most famous being huge flocks of flamingos that carpet the lake at certain times of the year. The lake hosts over 400 different bird species, including many water birds.

Lake Nakuru National Park is known as an important wildlife sanctuary for some of Africa’s endangered species, especially black and white rhinos, & Rothschild’s giraffes. The game reserve is also home to lions, waterbuck, buffalo, and baboons, which we keep an eye out for on our game drive.

Your safari closes with Kenya’s flagship national reserve: the Masai Mara, a scene of the dramatic Wildebeest Migration and a rewarding and exciting safari destination at any time of year. Wherever you go in the vast Masai Mara, you will see plenty of wildlife, such as Masai giraffes, baboons, warthogs, bat-eared foxes, grey jackals, spotted hyena, topi, impala, hartebeest, and wildebeest.

Elephants, buffalo, zebras, and hippos are also found in great numbers. It is also common to see lions either basking after a heavy meal or surveying the plains for their next meal. Cheetahs and leopards are harder to spot but reasonably common.

The ultimate action here is, without doubt, the annual wildebeest exodus, the Great Migration, in July and August, when millions of these grass eaters move north from the Serengeti in search of lusher grass before turning south again in October. Hot-air balloon trips are an outstanding way to see the savannah plains teeming with wildlife.
